AbbVie's mission is to discover and deliver innovative medicines and solutions that solve serious health issues today and address the medical challenges of tomorrow. We strive to have a remarkable impact on people's lives across several key therapeutic areas including immunology, oncology and neuroscience, and products and services in our Allergan Aesthetics portfolio.

About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist II who can conceive, implement, and execute novel scientific research and development. The candidate will independently develop, optimize new methods and techniques to generate reliable and reproducible data in a timely manner, and demonstrate broad versatile technical expertise. This role supports early phase development of New Chemical Entities (NCEs), particularly synthetic peptides, in both the preclinical and clinical development space.

The position focuses on transitioning NCEs from Discovery into Development Sciences. The individual will serve as an Analytical Research and Development representative in a highly cross-functional team, collaborating with Discovery, Process Chemistry, Quantitative and Translational ADME Sciences (QTAS), Safety Pharmacology, Pre-Clinical Safety (PCS), and Molecular Profiling and Drug Delivery (MPDD).

Candidates should be comfortable discussing organic chemistry topics relevant to analytical chemistry, such as stereoisomers, common functional groups, and pKa values. Experience with peptide development is required, and chromatographic analysis (such as HPLC or GC) and Mass Spectrometry is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support new peptide product development from an analytical perspective while working with cross-functional areas to advance projects through the development pipeline.
  • Support new peptide product development with advanced analytics to drive the pipeline and impactful research initiatives.
  • Utilize a range of analytical techniques to conduct research and development studies related to synthetic molecule drug substances, impurities, and impurity profiling.
  • Perform highly autonomous and productive laboratory research and/or method development, requiring minimal direction from or interaction with supervisor.
  • Initiate new areas of investigation that are scientifically meaningful, reliable, and can be incorporated directly into a research or development program.
  • Formulate conclusions and design follow-on experiments based on multidisciplinary data.
  • Process, interpret, and visualize data to facilitate project team decisions.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity in the lab and routinely demonstrate scientific initiative and creativity in research or development activities.
  • Develop methods, testing procedures, and implement analytical control strategies to advance drug discovery candidates.
  • Raise the bar and challenge the status quo.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences (with strong Analytical Focus), typically with a minimum of 12 (BS), 10 (MS), or 4 (Ph.D.) years of related industry experience.
  • Strong technical background in peptide development with excellent analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of independently developing and troubleshooting analytical methods.
  • Demonstrated experience with HPLC analysis and method development, along with expertise in spectroscopic techniques as they relate to peptide development and small molecules.
  • Comfortable discussing organic chemistry topics within analytical R&D and with partner functions.
  • Hands-on experience with synthetic organic chemistry preferred.
  • Self-motivated, hard-working, detail-oriented individual able to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Experience in the use of computerized data handling systems.
  • High-quality written and oral communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with interdisciplinary scientists and engineers.
  • Practical knowledge of organic structure, functional groups, chemistry, and modern spectroscopic techniques as applied to small-molecule analytical analysis.
  • Builds strong relationships with peers and cross-functional partners to enable higher performance.
  • Learns fast, grasps the "essence," and can change course quickly where indicated.
  • Creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.
  • Embraces the ideas of others, nurtures innovation, and manages innovation to reality.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off (vacation, holidays, sick).
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan.
  • Eligibility to participate in long-term incentive programs.
