Contract position based in Tarrytown, NY.

About the role

As a Scientist in a cutting-edge mass spectrometry laboratory, you will develop advanced mass spectrometry-based methods for biotherapeutic product characterization and molecule analysis across all stages of development. You will drive innovation and create technologies that support a diverse research and development pipeline, focusing on complex modalities such as monoclonal antibodies, bispecifics, siRNAs, and AAVs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute targeted and untargeted small-molecule and elemental analyses on cell culture media and drug molecules using LC-MS, GC-MS, and ICP-MS to support biotherapeutic product development.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate advanced mass spectrometry methods to enable robust characterization of biotherapeutic candidates and related materials.
  • Provide analytical support to cross-functional teams, including discovery, process development, formulation development, and manufacturing, to address drug development challenges and inform decision-making.
  • Independently perform sample preparation and mass spectrometry analyses, ensuring high-quality, reproducible data generation.
  • Document experimental procedures, methods, and results in electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN) with clarity and completeness.
  • Represent the analytical mass spectrometry function on project teams and serve as a subject matter expert for mass spectrometry-based characterization.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, data-driven presentations of experimental results and technical insights at internal and external meetings.
  • Contribute to extended characterization of monoclonal antibodies and other biologics by mass spectrometry to support product and process development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to implement and utilize liquid handlers and other laboratory automation tools to increase throughput and efficiency.
  • Stay current with advances in mass spectrometry technologies and analytical methodologies and apply relevant innovations to ongoing projects.

Requirements

  • MS degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a PhD in one of these disciplines with 0–2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with advanced mass spectrometry techniques, including method development and analysis using LC-MS, ICP-MS, and/or GC-MS.
  • Demonstrated expertise in small molecule characterization, including accurate mass measurement, isotope pattern analysis, and MS/MS fragmentation.
  • Proven ability to independently design, conduct, and troubleshoot complex mass spectrometry experiments in a laboratory setting.
  • Strong skills in documenting experimental work and results in electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN).
  • Experience supporting cross-functional scientific teams with analytical data and interpretation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex analytical data to diverse audiences.

Skills

  • Experience with extended characterization of monoclonal antibodies by mass spectrometry to support product and process development.
  • Familiarity with biotherapeutic modalities such as monoclonal antibodies, bispecifics, siRNAs, and AAVs.
  • Experience working with liquid handlers and laboratory automation to support high-throughput analytical workflows.
  • Understanding in analytical development within a drug development environment, particularly using protein mass spectrometry (LC-MS).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team and contribute to a culture of scientific excellence and innovation.
