Research$121k–$225k/yrFull-time

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, has been at the forefront of the biotechnology industry for more than 45 years, using human genetic information to develop novel medicines for serious and life-threatening diseases. We believe our employees are our most important asset and are dedicated to remaining a great place to work.

About the role

The Sr. Scientific Manager will help drive and execute our strategy for the adoption and use of blood-brain-barrier (BBB) models across the company and development portfolio. This role involves aligning model development and validation efforts, representing Genentech in external consortia, and driving internal adoption of BBB modeling technologies. Additionally, this position includes generating routine data, training scientists on in vitro BBB models, and maintaining laboratory upkeep. Strong organizational, multitasking, and communication skills are essential for success in this fast-paced and diverse research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Drive momentum in New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and collaborate internally across research and development functions to adopt BBB NAMs in portfolio projects.
  • Gain exposure to internal molecule development teams by generating data to contribute to molecule progression.
  • Develop external presence and influence by representing Genentech in relevant external consortia on NAM technologies, guiding activities to represent our interests in BBB and beyond.
  • Project management, Strategic Planning and Execution:
    • Contribute to and refine the organ area strategy for BBB models, communicating updates to project teams, development functions, and leadership.
    • Align overall BBB strategy across Roche and Genentech by coordinating scientific sharing across the Research and Early Development (RED) groups.
    • Track and drive the progression of adopting these models across functions.
    • Facilitate partnerships with external collaborators, including academic institutions, consortia, and CROs to advance NAM science.
    • Manage external collaborations in the BBB organ area, handling experimental and logistical requirements such as experimental design, compound requests, and shipments.
  • Laboratory and Scientific Contributions:
    • Act as a central source of knowledge for BBB models used at Genentech, performing experiments to support cross-functional needs.
    • Train end-users across internal functions and provide scientific support for model troubleshooting, data interpretation, and development of new assays or models.
    • Participate in routine laboratory upkeep tasks, such as stocking, coordinating equipment maintenance, and cleanouts.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in biology, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, pharmacology, or a related field with significant experience in in vitro systems; exceptional candidates with equivalent experience will be considered.
  • 1-3+ years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or research organizations, with a focus on complex in vitro systems.
  • Proven experience in developing, qualifying, and applying complex in vitro BBB models (e.g., organoids, MPS, or related platforms) in drug discovery or translational research.
  • Prior experience in a project management or strategy-focused role is highly desirable, with demonstrated success in cross-functional collaboration.

Skills

  • Project management expertise and impeccable organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Scientific background in blood-brain barrier biology or neurobiology and in vitro modeling.
  • Strong understanding of the biological underpinnings and applications of complex in vitro systems in drug development.
  • Team-oriented mindset, fostering innovation, collaboration, and driving impact.
