About the role
The Senior Safety Manager – Compliance is responsible for providing operational oversight, safety, and service quality for the transportation services provided to Boston Public Schools (BPS), schools, students, and families. This position is part of the largest private-sector operator of public transportation in North America, committed to caring for its employees, passengers, and communities.
Responsibilities
- Oversees all safety incidents and investigations, reports both incidents and accidents to senior leadership as needed and ensures open communications daily with BPS; supports daily operations; provides employees with coaching, counseling, tools and information; and ensures enforcement of workplace policies and procedures using progressive disciplinary steps, when needed.
- Manages the site Safety and Training Department including but not limited to: all aspects of site safety training; classroom and behind-the-wheel training schedules, logistics and documentation; and personnel and qualification files pertaining to training, safety and loss matters.
- Oversees the DriveCam program to increase safety awareness and decrease accidents, near misses, and risky behavior.
- Manages the Safety Desk and Road Safety Supervisors to ensure prompt deployments, responses, and reporting for all incidents and accidents.
- Ensures that all reporting and risk management tools, including WebRisk, are always up to date and correct.
- Conducts evaluations and inspections to mitigate risk and minimize risk of loss potential.
- Communicates company programs, rules, and tools related to safety.
- Ensures contract compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and company/client regulations; ensures that related record keeping and reporting requirements are met and maintained; provides support in implementing the approved recommendations.
- Maintains confidentiality of all information.
Requirements
- Five (5) years of experience in passenger transit safety or training.
- Four (4) years of supervisory experience in passenger transit safety or training.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or G.E.D.
- A valid driver’s license.
- A satisfactory driving history.
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business, Public Administration, or related field preferred.
- A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements preferred.
- A Massachusetts School Bus Trainer Certificate preferred.
- Applicable professional certifications preferred.
Skills and Knowledge
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) rules and regulations.
- Excellent computer skills and proficiency with various types of software including Microsoft Office.
- Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to explain and present regulations to others.
- Poise, tact, diplomacy, and good judgement and discretion.
- Familiarity with defensive driving programs.
- Ability to create, retrieve and maintain information and reports.
- Detail oriented, well organized, and effective time management skills.
- Proven customer service and interpersonal skills, and the ability to interact professionally with internal and external customers on all levels.
- Ability to manage and work effectively with a diverse workforce.
- Ability to influence people at all levels of the organization.
