About the role

The City of Tacoma is seeking a Senior Safety Consultant to support the City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Utilities. This position reports to the Enterprise Safety Manager, Field Compliance Division in the Office of Health and Safety.

Responsibilities

  • Build and manage a comprehensive employee safety and risk reduction program.
  • Work with the safety team and field operations to implement large city projects.
  • Develop and execute health and safety programs in accordance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Conduct and evaluate training and presentations to maintain a culture of health and safety.
  • Evaluate practices, procedures, and facilities to assess risk and adhere to the law.
  • Support and monitor workplace activities to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Coordinate, consult, create, facilitate, and administer safety programs and trainings citywide.
  • Support and monitor workplace activities for City of Tacoma employees to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Handle, or be exposed to moderate risk in different working environments.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in safety or directly related field.
  • Minimum Experience: 4 years of experience administering health, safety, or loss prevention programs.
  • Relevant Education and Experience: May substitute for one another on a year-for-year basis.
  • Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements: Washington State Driver's License, ASP, CSP, CHMM, CIH, OR CSHM preferred; OSHA 30 preferred; 40-Hour HAZWOPER preferred.
  • Knowledge & Skills: Understanding of basic industrial hygiene practices, inspecting or surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards, analyzing or evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards, implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of incidents and occupational illnesses, implementing environmental safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards, implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of incidents and occupational illnesses, analyzing or evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards, recommending solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures, driving to job sites within a 100-mile radius and conducting thorough worksite evaluations and facility inspections, overseeing and or conducting incident investigations to provide analysis on risk metrics and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Leadership Skills: Leading as a change agent to embrace and implement new processes, working collaboratively and establishing rapport with internal and external stakeholders, developing innovative and effective solutions for complex issues, accepting challenges, exercising good judgment, and taking appropriate risks, demonstrating a working understanding of industrial hygiene programs and practices such as hearing conservation and respiratory protection, ergonomics, and hierarchy of controls.
  • Business Acumen: Making sound business decisions based on limited and complex information and ethical principles, identifying opportunities for continued improvements; using innovative and integrating new approaches in solving problems, addressing and effectively solving organizational concerns/issues, demonstrating strong analytical skills including the knowledge of basic statistical and risk metric principles, ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations, ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Communication/Diplomacy/Teamwork/Customer Focus: Collaborating, presenting, and discussing information with various audiences including department heads, other safety professionals, stakeholders, and other internal customers, providing persuasive, confidence-inducing and well-organized oral presentations, writing succinct, informative, and clear communications, understanding and meeting the needs of customers from varied departments and translating the voice of the customer into business improvements, providing a high level of customer orientation and effective interpersonal skills with extensive interactions and collaboration with department heads, staff, and other internal customers, ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.
