Senior Roadway Engineer

About the role

HDR’s Transportation Business Group is seeking a Senior Roadway Engineer to join our South Carolina team. In this role, you will help shape systems that move people and goods safely, efficiently, and sustainably, contributing to economic vitality, public safety, and resilient communities. You’ll work on projects ranging from resilient highways and iconic bridges to transit, rail, aviation, and marine infrastructure, with opportunities to modernize aging systems or pioneer next-generation solutions. As an employee-owner, you’ll collaborate across disciplines—planners, engineers, architects, environmental specialists, and more—to solve complex mobility challenges with technical excellence and community focus.

Responsibilities

• Serve in a technical role under the direction of a Project Manager on the engineering development of urban and rural highway/roadway projects
• Oversee the work of CAD Designers and, as needed, EITs
• Prepare detailed engineering designs for roadway and highway projects
• Participate in activities ranging from site feasibility analysis to final design and through the construction phase
• Assume some project management duties and interact with clients as needed

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design
• Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., PE or P.Eng)
• Demonstrated leadership, communication skills, and ability to work with various teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Local candidates are preferred
• Project management skills desirable
• Experience should include urban and rural highway interchanges, intersection design, traffic management, transportation planning, site planning, preparation of concept alignments, geometrical layout, and CAD base alignment plans
• Coordination of survey, grading, drainage, utilities, and layout of various site items is a plus
