About the role

We are hiring a Senior Roadway Design Technical Expert to join our dynamic Transportation Team at one of our Ohio offices. This position reports to the Ohio Transportation Practice Lead and is responsible for the design of roadway, bikeway, trail, and pedestrian projects. The role involves conceptual and preliminary layout of complex roadway, highway, and interchange designs, providing guidance to Project Managers, and training other staff. The Senior Roadway Design Specialist will work on a variety of transportation projects spanning multiple clients, states, and project types, collaborating closely with other design teams in bridges, traffic, site development, and planning.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an expert in the design of concept, schematic, and preliminary level plans.
  • Layout and design complex geometry, making recommendations for designs such as the best type of intersection for specific projects and geography.
  • Lead the design of complex roadway and transportation projects requiring creative solutions, including roadways, bikeways, pedestrian facilities, roundabouts, trails, multi-modal transportation, or transportation planning.
  • Direct engineering design tasks such as highway and street design, roadway alignments, roundabout design, roadway grading and modeling, curb ramp design, signing and pavement plans, maintenance of traffic, and storm drainage.
  • Use local and federal roadway standards to prepare preliminary and final design documents, cost estimates, and bid documents.
  • Perform detailed reviews of design plans and supporting documents.
  • Perform designs using software including MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer (ORD), AutoCAD, and/or Civil 3D.
  • Assist Project Managers in writing proposals and preparing scope, schedule, and budget for projects.
  • Mentor design staff and allocate work to others.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related technical design field.
  • A minimum of 8+ years of professional experience required; 15+ years preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE); ability to obtain an Ohio license within 6 months if licensed in another state.
  • Expertise in Roadway, Highway, Trail, Bikeway/Pedestrian, and/or Roadway Drainage design.
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D, MicroStation, and OpenRoads Designer (ORD).
  • Experience with ODOT, INDOT, PennDOT, FDOT, or TxDOT is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work across disciplines and coordinate with other firms on projects.

Pay

Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay Range: $139,200 - $174,000 USD.
