About the role

We are seeking a qualified Laboratory Technician to join our Cooking Lab Operations Team at the Edgewater Technology Center in St. Joseph, Michigan. The technician will assemble cooking products, subassemblies, and components required for product approval and evaluation testing. Responsibilities include troubleshooting and repairing malfunctioning products, installing lab instrumentation for engineering data acquisition, and working closely with product engineers and laboratory technicians in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Weld thermocouples and secure them to components within cooking appliances to monitor and record temperatures.
  • Move appliances from dock to test stations.
  • Follow and perform complex testing procedures under supervision.
  • Provide technical support to project teams and communicate test results.
  • Generate datasheets and test reports with assistance from experienced technicians.
  • Work on multiple test plans to ensure timely completion of testing.
  • Update test equipment and methods in the lab.
  • Perform product and component testing, analysis, and problem-solving while developing a strong understanding of appliance operations and lab procedures.
  • Develop, execute, and document new test procedures, gathering knowledge through test results to analyze problems for root cause.
  • Maintain strong communication with the supervisor and related departments.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 6+ months of experience using laboratory equipment such as basic tools, temperature chambers, measuring devices (rulers or electronic scales), or data acquisition tools.

Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Whirlpool Cooking and Refrigeration products (preferred).
  • Experience with UL, CSA, or ANSI safety standards and test methods (preferred).
  • Electrical and mechanical aptitude.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • HVAC or electronics experience (preferred).
  • Continuous Improvement and 5S mindset.
  • Working knowledge of basic gas and electric systems, and mechanical aptitude or equivalent technical experience.
  • Ability to quickly become proficient in disassembly and reassembly of home appliances.
  • Attention to detail and a keen eye for spotting anomalies in product assemblies.
  • Ability to follow procedures and instructions, and willingness to ask for clarification or training as needed.
  • Outstanding teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to multitask.
  • Availability to work overtime or weekends as needed.
