Argus is seeking a Senior Reporter to join its Freight team. Through advanced subject-matter expertise and experience, you will cover the crude tanker market as well as be familiar with other freight markets, like petroleum products, gas, and dry bulk. You will help set direction for team coverage, act as a mentor to less-experienced colleagues, and assist the editor with end-of-day tasks. You will collaborate with colleagues on other teams and in other regions and functions.
The global freight market is in a state of constant change at the center of international trade, geopolitics, and environmental regulation. This represents an exciting opportunity to join the team and cover high-profile news that can reshape global trade and impact the wider crude, oil products, dry bulk, and gas commodity industries.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and assess markets to produce daily price assessments, market commentaries, news, analysis, and reports
- Curate data and maintain and analyze existing data series to inform coverage; develop graphs and charts within Excel to illustrate trends and analysis
- Develop an understanding of relevant commodity markets, working with other Argus teams to produce joint content
- Conduct regular meetings and daily communication with key industry members, including traders, brokers, and business leaders, to build relationships and gather news
- Contribute copy to relevant daily and periodical publications and the online news service, as well as special content and presentations as required
- Work with other departments to help promote the use of Argus price assessments and develop new pricing tools for the freight market
- Attend meetings, conferences, and industry events to build contacts, report on news, and represent Argus in the industry
Requirements
- A graduate with a strong degree
- Proven ability to develop, source, and write industry-relevant news to deadline
- Knowledge of commodity markets and/or freight sectors is useful but not essential
- Excellent writing, grammar, and numeracy skills (these will be tested as part of the interview process)
- Ability to use data in generating stories and analysis is preferred; willingness to learn is essential
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to network and build contacts with industry executives; strong presentation skills also preferred
- Prior experience in the financial or energy journalism sector is useful but not essential
- Strong coordination and time management skills with the ability to work well within a team
- Additional languages are useful but not essential
- Demonstrable interest in global business and politics
- Self-motivated, able to use initiative, and equipped with an inquisitive nature
- Ability to collaborate and work within a close-knit team is essential
