Senior Registrar - Intensive Care (ICU) - November 2026

About the role

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. It is the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, offering ambulatory, inpatient and home and community-based services.

The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is a state‑of‑the‑art 65‑bed unit that treats over 3,000 patients per year.

• Victorian state services for heart and lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplantation)
• Short‑ and long‑term mechanical cardiac device support
• Extra‑corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
• Burns and hyperbaric medicine
• Adult trauma, HIV and bone marrow transplantation (autologous and allogeneic)
• Most other surgical and medical subspecialties, reflecting the quaternary referral centre status of The Alfred Hospital

The unit is accredited for two core years of training as stipulated by the College of Intensive Care Medicine.

An extensive consultant‑led education program includes:

• Dedicated protected weekly teaching sessions for junior and senior registrars to develop technical and non‑technical skills
• Weekly journal club sessions
• In‑situ simulation training
• Bronchoscopy training
• ECMO and artificial heart training program enabling formal certification
• Leadership and mentoring training for senior registrars, with certification available on completion
• Additional consultant‑led training for advanced trainees preparing for the CICM examination

Requirements

In accordance with the Health Services Amendment (Mandatory Vaccination of Healthcare Workers) Act 2020, health care workers in Category A or B roles (as determined by the department’s risk ratings) are required to be vaccinated against influenza or hold an acceptable medical exemption.
