About the Role

Two part-time Senior Recreation Leader positions are available within the Parks and Recreation Department:

  • Multi-Generational Center (MGC) – Supports daily operations of the Multi-Generational Center with shifts between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., including weekends and holidays.
  • Sports Supervising – Primarily works evenings and Saturdays supervising youth and adult sports programs; requires experience and knowledge of organized sports.

Both positions are part-time, averaging less than 20 hours per week. Work schedules vary based on program needs, with possible periods of limited or no scheduled hours.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee front desk operations, customer service, and positive customer relationships.
  • Assist with memberships, program registrations, and facility reservations.
  • Set up and take down rooms for events and activities.
  • Assist with or lead recreational programs and special events, including sports, aquatics, cultural events, outdoor activities, and senior services.
  • Supervise Recreation Leaders, volunteer coaches, and contracted sports officials.
  • Ensure programs operate safely and efficiently.
  • Prepare program and event publicity, including news releases, flyers, pamphlets, and brochures.
  • Supervise the issuance, use, care, and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in scheduling, operating, setting up, and maintaining City facilities.
  • Inspect recreation areas, facilities, and equipment for safety.
  • Plan, organize, and direct recreational activities at schools, parks, Multi-Gen Center, and other areas.
  • Prepare ball fields, including setting bases, chalking/painting lines, and operating lighting systems.
  • Perform routine clerical work, such as filing, billing, cashiering, and customer service.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate lower-level Recreation Leaders, volunteers, and contract staff.
  • Maintain a safe environment for staff and participants.
  • Support the City’s policies, goals, and objectives while ensuring compliance with safety procedures.

Requirements

Must possess a high school diploma or GED, and one (1) year of paid full-time experience in a recreation or education-related field, including climbing wall use, fitness, sports, aquatics, arts & crafts, or youth, teen, or senior programming. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

Skills & Knowledge

  • City and Department procedures, policies, and guidelines.
  • Arizona Revised Statutes and Federal employment laws.
  • Basic principles and practices of recreation program development.
  • Rules and regulations governing competitive athletic games.
  • Basic first aid, injury prevention, and reporting procedures.
  • Safety regulations and protocols.
