Senior Project Manager – Chemical Measurement Center
At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget. Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus.

The Nuclear Sciences Division, part of the Energy and Environment Directorate, delivers science and technology innovations for the environment, energy, and national security. At a time when complex challenges are emerging on many fronts, we address some of the most challenging national and international nuclear issues. This includes providing technological solutions that protect the public health and safety around nuclear facilities, developing durable new materials for extreme nuclear environments, innovating new nuclear processes for the safety and security of the nation, and delivering new approaches for accelerating environmental cleanup of nuclear sites. The division’s capabilities and efforts are focused on environmental management of nuclear sites, nuclear regulatory processes, national nuclear security, and advancing nuclear energy.
Responsibilities
PNNL is seeking a senior project manager to lead the Chemical Management Center (CMC), an EED stewarded Service Center that spans multiple radiological laboratory spaces in 331 and RPL/325. The CMC is a comprehensive and integrated radioanalytical capability essential to enabling primary research mission projects. The CMC Lead would actively manage both the Analytical Service Center in 331 and the Analytical Services Organization in the Radiochemical Processing Laboratory (RPL). Previously these two components were managed independently. The selected candidate would be expected to develop and implement a new strategy for managing the entirety of the CMC, leveraging the best practices of both.
In this role, the CMC Lead will manage and optimize a matrixed, cross-divisional infrastructure of technical and administrative functions required to support sample analysis and reporting, quality control, billing, and delivery of work on schedule and within budget. Given the scale, complexity, and hands-on nature of the CMC’s work, the selected candidate will be expected to spend the majority of their time on-site at RPL. The position will report within the Nuclear Chemistry and Engineering organizational structure.

- Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
- Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the applicant selected for hire is subject to pre-employment drug testing, and post-employment random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP). Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy if non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months cannot be demonstrated.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
- Ability to achieve Radiological Worker 2 qualification.
- Ability to access the Personnel Contamination Monitors (PCMs) when exiting Radiological Buffer Areas.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS/BA and 11+ years of relevant project management experience OR
- MS/MA or higher and 9+ years of relevant project management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preferred degree in Chemistry, Nuclear Engineering, Physics or closely related field.
- Experience in alpha, beta, and gamma spectroscopy and count-room operations and management.
- Experience in conducting and/or reporting of analytical radiochemistry, and in analytical radiochemistry laboratory operations.
- Experience in conducting and/or reporting of quantitative instrumental analysis, such as ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IC, Carbon Analysis, Gas Mass Spectrometry, etc.
- Knowledge of Standard Methods, ASME, Industrial Hygiene, EPA SW-846 RCRA Methods, and air chemistry methods.
- Experience working to HASQARD, Rev. 4, ASME-NQA-2008/2009 and addendum and ISO/IEC 17025:2005 or 2017 quality assurance programs.
- Project Management Professional Certification.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
- The group and team reside in the Radiochemical Processing Laboratory (RPL). The RPL is a Hazard Category II Nuclear Facility with capability for performing work on high-level radioactive and hazardous materials.
- There will be occasional off-shift work evenings, nights and weekends.
