Senior Project Engineer- Substation
Location: The Woodlands, TX | Full-Time
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer IV - Substation to lead a team of approximately five engineers and CAD designers supporting substation physical layout and Protection & Control (P&C) engineering projects. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in substation engineering, proven leadership experience, and the ability to serve as a client-facing point of contact. This position will also serve as the sealing engineer for a majority of the team's work while supporting project management, customer relationships, and business development activities.
Responsibilities
- Lead, supervise, and schedule a team of engineers, designers, and CAD operators.
- Direct and perform substation engineering and design activities, including physical layout and Protection & Control.
- Perform engineering calculations and utilize appropriate engineering/design software, procedures, and industry standards.
- Prepare and oversee complex engineering documents, specifications, and bid packages.
- Review, check, and mark up complex substation drawing packages to ensure accuracy, clarity, and completeness.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Project Engineers and junior engineering staff.
- Support and participate in substation relay settings, testing, commissioning, and field support activities.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned customers and manage customer satisfaction throughout projects.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing clients and identify opportunities for future business.
- Participate in project planning, scheduling, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure projects are completed in accordance with applicable engineering standards, safety requirements, schedules, and quality expectations.
- Collaborate effectively with employees, clients, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook for project-related activities.
- Promote and contribute to a strong company-wide safety culture.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
- 8+ years of relevant electrical/substation engineering experience.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Strong experience with substation engineering and design.
- Experience in multiple areas of substation engineering, including:
- Physical substation layout/design
- Protection & Control
- Relay settings/programming
- Relay testing
- Substation commissioning
- Field engineering/support
- Proven experience leading or supervising engineering/design teams.
- Strong technical drawing and design review capabilities.
- Excellent communication and client relationship management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with electric utilities, engineering consulting firms, or EPC organizations.
- Experience managing utility clients and supporting business development.
- Experience reviewing and sealing engineering deliverables.
- Strong knowledge of substation design standards, engineering procedures, and industry practices.
- Experience mentoring and developing junior engineers.
