Senior Project Engineer
About the role
Independently determines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and establishes project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction. Projects may include frequent travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
Initiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services, follows up on contacts, and discusses technical issues, UL procedures, project costs, completion dates, and sample requirements. Addresses and resolves complex client issues and provides technical assistance related to product inspection and follow-up services.
Establishes appropriate test programs by reviewing files, manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements. Identifies areas of non-compliance or changes in project scope and notifies the client. Coordinates complex laboratory activities, prepares data sheets and instructions for technicians, and manages administrative aspects of project management.
Serves as Project Handler of record and signs as Reviewer of record as assigned. Communicates project status and results to clients through frequent contact and reports. Prepares Follow-Up Service Procedures and information pages. Integrates continuous improvement concepts into all aspects of the job.
Resolves complex engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of variations. Develops UL requirements for testing products beyond existing standards or involving unique features requiring independent judgment. Develops special test methods and test equipment, and coordinates or performs File Reviews.
May represent UL on technical committees or industry-related functions such as seminars and trade shows. May provide direction as a Primary Designated Engineer or Designated Engineer for specific product categories. Directs and reviews the work of assigned staff, trains office, field, and laboratory staff, and entry-level engineers. Provides technical assistance across multiple product categories, operations, or systems to laboratory and field staff.
Reads and follows the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and adheres to all physical and digital security practices. Performs other duties as directed.

Requirements
- University degree in Electrical Engineering required.
- Eight years of related project management or industry experience.
- Knowledge of certification and standards processes.
- Understanding of industry needs and issues.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication and customer interaction skills.
- Attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Driver’s license required.
