About the Role

The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for field and project engineering, quality control, contract administration, shop drawing and submittal review, schedule review, and related support functions for Gafcon’s Project and Construction Management Team. The ideal candidate will take on leadership roles within the project team and be involved in strategic planning and managing more complex projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a strong understanding of Gafcon’s role for our clients, including each project’s scope of work, contract documents (drawings, specifications, design, and construction contracts), and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and technical expertise to the project team to resolve issues and make critical decisions to keep the project on track.
  • Coordinate and review design drawings and specifications, update as-builts, and track design changes.
  • Review submittals, log and upload submissions to the document management system, and manage the document control system.
  • Manage the work of the client’s consultants, including geotechnical engineers, surveyors, sub-surface imaging, deputy inspectors, testing and special inspectors, architects, and other required consultants.
  • Coordinate development of cost estimates with the estimator and provide technical assistance as required.
  • Coordinate/assist the bidding process, including assembling bidding documents, preparing bid packages, responding to bid-phase RFIs, preparing and issuing addenda, attending pre-bid conferences and job walks, and recording bid results.
  • Review bid packages, perform due diligence, and prepare bid evaluations.
  • Collect all required documents from the contractor after award (e.g., insurance certificates, bonds, agreement) and prepare/conduct the preconstruction conference.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date project information in the Project Management Information System (PMIS) and assist with computerized project reports.
  • Assist with project management to ensure completion in accordance with Gafcon’s standards and client expectations.
  • Change Order Management: Review entitlement, evaluate potential costs and schedule impacts, log and track contractor-submitted change order requests, and provide recommendations.
  • Review contractor’s Requests for Information (RFIs), log and monitor design team’s responses, and ensure clarity and timely responses.
  • Assist in establishing a master schedule, review the contractor’s baseline schedule, and provide comments. Review monthly schedule updates.
  • Monitor construction progress to ensure compliance with quality standards and specifications.
  • Assist with review of contractor’s progress payment applications and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with monitoring required field testing and inspections, maintain logs, and upload reports to the project documentation management system.
  • Assist with review and maintenance of contractor’s safety measures, including barricades, fences, signage, and staging areas, ensuring public safety.
  • Monitor contractor’s Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan Best Management Practices and dust control measures.
  • Assist with project commissioning alongside the Project Commissioning Team.
  • Coordinate project closeout, including training, review of contractor closeout submittals, and managing warranty requests.
  • Serve as a technical expert in the project scope and provide guidance on complex technical issues.
  • Maintain a positive attitude, foster a team approach, and contribute to a collaborative project culture.
  • Pursue personal development through GafCollege, professional organizations, continuing education, and certifications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Senior Project Engineer does not have direct reports but will serve as a mentor to other Project Coordinators and Project Engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, architecture, or engineering (AEC) or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
  • 3-5 years of design and/or construction experience preferred.
  • Certified Associate Construction Manager (CACM) certification preferred.
  • Working knowledge of construction processes, plan review, cost estimating, scheduling, and contract administration.
  • Ability to accurately interpret construction contractual documents and contract modifications to determine cost.
  • Strong analytical skills to assist in developing cost estimates.
  • Proficient oral and written communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive, cooperative, team-oriented relationships with coworkers, supervisors, managers, clients, and others.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to assess and meet customer needs.
  • Ability to efficiently handle multiple and shifting priorities.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and knowledgeable with PMIS (e.g., Unifier, Prolog, Procore, PM Web, eBuilder). P6, AutoCAD, and/or Revit experience is preferred.
