The Office of the City Auditor plays a key role in improving the efficiency, effectiveness, and equity of services provided to the city’s nearly 1 million residents. Through independent, objective performance audits, we evaluate City operations and make recommendations to improve programs and services across the organization.

About the role

The Office of the City Auditor is seeking motivated individuals dedicated to improving government and services to San José residents. Multiple Performance Auditor positions are available, including Senior Program Performance Auditor and Program Performance Auditor I/II. These roles involve leading or supporting City Council-assigned performance audits of City operations.

Responsibilities

  • Senior Program Performance Auditors typically lead and coordinate all aspects of audits, including identifying areas of inquiry, developing audit programs, overseeing data collection and analysis, preparing audit findings and reports, and directing the work of other auditors to achieve audit objectives.
  • Program Performance Auditor I/IIs typically serve as audit team members, analyzing complex operations, financial and organizational issues, evaluating alternatives, and developing fact-based findings and recommendations to improve City services.
  • Audit subjects vary widely and may include public safety, parks and libraries, community and economic development, and other City programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required for all positions).
  • Program Performance Auditor I: Entry-level position; no prior experience required.
  • Program Performance Auditor II: Two (2) years of relevant experience in performance auditing.
  • Senior Program Performance Auditor: Five (5) years of performance auditing experience; a Master’s Degree or professional certification is preferred.
  • Knowledge of government programs and operations and Government Auditing Standards.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, writing, creative problem-solving, and leadership skills.

Pay

  • Senior Program Performance Auditor: $135,902 to $178,973 annually.
  • Program Performance Auditor II: $110,745 to $145,887 annually.
  • Program Performance Auditor I: $93,386 to $123,014 annually.
