About the role

The Senior Product Owner serves as the customer proxy to the Agile team within the agile process and is the final authority for decisions regarding priority, business value, and functionality for all the work done by the Agile development team. This role analyzes complex cross-functional business processes, defines integrated user stories using industry-standard techniques, and applies modified approaches to meet different circumstances.

In partnership with their Scrum Master, the Senior Product Owner monitors metrics and suggests new ways of increasing quality while verifying the business value delivered by the team. The role directly works with one to two Agile teams, depending on initiative complexity, and may operate on a Scaled Agile Release Train as part of the Product Management team or on independent Agile teams with feature and story ownership.

This hybrid role is based in the Chicago, IL or the New York, NY office.

Responsibilities

  • Supports one to two Agile Scrum teams on initiatives of medium to large complexity.
  • Owns, defines, and prioritizes the team backlog, establishes story acceptance criteria, drives content via prioritized user stories, obtains customer validation, and accepts stories to ensure the solution effectively addresses overall program priorities.
  • Acts as a thought leader in Scrum ceremonies (e.g., daily standups, sprint review meetings, retrospective meetings, cross-team coordination) alongside the Scrum Master, ensuring Scrum Teams adhere to Scrum values: courage, focus, commitment, respect, and openness in delivering high-quality solutions.
  • Fosters an environment of continuous improvement and learning.
  • Leads Product Backlog Refinement, including reviewing and updating backlog item definitions, developing acceptance criteria and value statements, providing information to the team for technical feasibility and scope estimates, analyzing ways to split backlog items, and establishing capacity allocation.
  • Builds customer and user insights into all stages of the Scrum planning and execution process, ensuring continuous validation of stories with customers and business users.
  • Proactively analyzes metrics and recommends product changes based on data from feedback loops.
  • Inspires and motivates a team where members constructively challenge each other, demonstrate ownership, and advocate for long-term decision-making.
  • Builds a trusting and safe environment within the team, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with Product Managers and other Senior Product Owners to ensure stories align with value, goals, and objectives of overall program priorities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years’ experience as a Product Owner or similar role, with three years’ experience within the Commercial or Personal insurance industry.
  • Knowledge of policy administration systems and policy lifecycle processes.
  • Proven experience in rating and issuance of policies preferred.
  • Multiline Property & Casualty (P&C) experience preferred, with strong knowledge of National Accounts Property and Middle Market Property underwriting.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and a successful track record implementing technology enhancements to policy administration or underwriting systems.
  • Applicable certifications preferred (e.g., SAFe PO/PM, CSPO, or PSPO).
  • Strong expertise in Large Property and Middle Market Property underwriting.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and experience evaluating, piloting, or scaling AI-enabled capabilities to solve business problems and improve user experiences.

Pay

In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $72,000 to $141,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and location.
