Senior Process Engineer

About the Role

The Senior Engineer will work in general support of operations, focusing on continual improvement and a portfolio of specific engineering projects across multiple Sunrock sites. This visible professional role interacts with Sunrock management, vendors, and surrounding communities. The position assists in organizing, directing, coordinating, and controlling engineering services to deliver superior customer service, ensure safe and stable operations, and optimize engineering efforts for responsible resource management.

The role includes backup and project-specific responsibilities for plant and mobile equipment operations, with hands-on involvement in project and maintenance construction. The employee must be available on-call to address issues rapidly and accurately. Work may be independent or within a team, requiring absolute confidentiality and good judgment in all duties.

Responsibilities

• Complies with all safety policies, procedures, and established safe practices; ensures reporting employees do the same. Reports unsafe conditions and monitors safety practices (including PPE) of team members.
• Maintains a clean and orderly work area, adhering to Sunrock, MSHA 30 CFR 56.20003, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22 standards.
• Assists in developing and overseeing the implementation of technical policies and practices for the engineering services function.
• Coordinates facility and quarry improvements from design through implementation with internal departments, outside vendors, county officials, and regulatory agencies.
• Reviews existing operations and recommends improvements to increase efficiency and productivity.
• Works hands-on to construct approved plant modifications or new construction.
• Operates mobile equipment and plants as needed to back up existing operators and managers.
• Indirectly manages personnel for specific projects and operational responsibilities.
• Participates in developing new technologies to support service and facilities-related codes and standards.
• Examines, modifies, and adapts documents and drawings to ensure they meet current industry standards.
• Assists in financial analysis for projects and recommends capital expenditures.
• Assists in preparing annual budgets for operations.
• Utilizes Sunrock engineering and design programs, including AutoCAD, GPS land surveying software, and AggFlow aggregate plant flow simulation software.
• Recommends additional engineering, design, or organizational programs to improve efficiency and accessibility.
• Manages a project portfolio, including mine and pit planning, infrastructure, phase organizational development, and construction site development.
• Assists with permitting and compliance-related activities as directed.
• Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
• Provides leadership through example and knowledge sharing.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field with 3–5 years of relevant experience. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
• Current North Carolina driver’s license.
• NCDOT Aggregate Sampling & Testing Certification.

Skills

• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.
• Proficiency in mathematical concepts, including probability, statistical inference, geometry, and trigonometry.
• Ability to apply mathematical concepts (fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions) to practical situations.
• Strong problem-solving skills: defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.
• Ability to interpret complex technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and handle abstract and concrete variables.
• Experience with complex computer operations, including intermediate programming in 3rd and 4th generation languages, relational databases, and operating systems.
• Proficiency in advanced software features (AggFlow, spreadsheets, graphics, etc.).
• Ability to prioritize and organize tasks, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.

Schedule

Normal work hours are 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with weekends as needed. Early starts and late evenings are common during peak seasons. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) may be required.

Working Conditions

The role operates in varied environments, including well-lit, heated, or air-conditioned indoor office settings and outdoor production/construction sites exposed to changing weather conditions (rain, sun, snow, wind). Indoor noise levels are moderate; outdoor noise levels are loud.
