Senior Probation Officer

Full-time, non-exempt position located at 405 Argentine Street, Georgetown, CO 80444. This role requires one day per week travel to the Summit location during work time.

About the role

The Judicial Department works to provide equal access to justice, contribute to public safety, and strengthen the rule of law across Colorado. This position performs experienced Probation Officer case management responsibilities, including investigation, assessment, supervision, resource coordination, and monitoring of clients court-ordered for services. The role facilitates long-term behavior change of clients through evidence-based practices to reduce recidivism, support victim reparation, and enhance community safety. This position may mentor and train less experienced Officers and direct the work of volunteers or interns.

Responsibilities

• Perform case management duties including documenting client-related activities, reviewing client documents and court orders, and managing the client's e-file.
• Conduct face-to-face appointments and interviews with clients.
• Perform ongoing assessments to determine treatment needs and risk to the community.
• Develop appropriate case plans to guide supervision and ensure compliance with court-imposed conditions.
• Assess, prioritize, and respond to critical incidents and potential risks in the field and office.
• De-escalate hostile or agitated clients and potentially violent situations.
• Complete a variety of reports to assess criminal behavior and provide relevant information and sentencing options to the court.
• Submit comprehensive compliance reports to the Court, including revocation documents, while protecting confidential information.
• Update the Court as needed and provide professional testimony.
• Attend meetings at outside agencies, such as family engagement and community supervision team meetings, to assist in monitoring offenders.
• Inform staff, stakeholders, and the public on the Victim Rights Amendment.
• Respond to community feedback regarding clients and probationers.
• Collect victim statements and positions for various court proceedings.
• Collaborate with other judicial districts and states on victim-related concerns.
• Participate in professional development and growth trainings.
• Collaborate in focus groups, work groups, or committees to further initiatives at the local and state level.
• Attend required meetings and complete trainings.
• Provide guidance and potentially oversee another employee, including work quality, training, instructing, and work assignments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, human services, or a related field.
• OR an associate's degree in the same fields plus two (2) years of work-related experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, social work, psychology, or a related field.
• OR a High School Diploma or G.E.D. plus four (4) years of work-related experience in the same fields, substituting on a year-for-year basis for formal education.
• At least two (2) years of work-related experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, social work, psychology, or a related field, with one (1) year specifically as a Probation Officer for the Colorado Judicial Department.

• Capability to provide guidance, training, and oversight to less experienced staff or volunteers.
• Ability to manage special projects with minimal oversight.

Working Conditions

• Exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
• Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions, hazards, and risks.
• Occasional outside work in an office environment.
• Exposure to hostile or irate individuals, those with known violent backgrounds, communicable diseases, and bodily fluids.

Pay

Salary range: $64,332.96 - $97,747.80 per year. Offers are based on experience, skills, education, and budget availability, and comply with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
