Senior Principal Systems Engineer - MilAv OPAS (Remote)

About the role

The Open Platform Application Software (OPAS) team is seeking an exceptionally motivated Senior Principal Systems Engineer passionate about systems engineering in a multi-disciplinary environment. This position supports development of product lines and demonstration programs, motivating team members, facilitating meetings, and cultivating group values and behaviors. Projects span the entire development lifecycle, including pursuit and order capture, system design, requirements definition, allocation, traceability, use case development, software development, systems integration, verification testing, and qualification.

The candidate will collaborate closely with systems and software engineers, Project Chief Engineers (PEs), Product Line/Program Management, hardware, electrical, and support staff to ensure defined requirements are consistently met and high-quality solutions are delivered. This role will help define future-ready avionics solutions that exceed customer expectations.

Product Summary

The team develops software products supporting navigation, flight planning, guidance (MFMS-1000), and real-time hazard avoidance (Avoidance Re-Router ARR-7000). These include a software layer in a distributed, layered architecture (such as the FACE Technical Standard) responsible for moving data between applications via Transport Segment Services (TSS), deployed on emerging platforms and next-generation pursuits.

Responsibilities

• Technical management and design review preparation and conduct.
• Requirements analysis and derivation, performance prediction, allocation of system-level requirements to lower-level requirements, and requirements management.
• Manage the technical performance of a program team, including multiple small teams (5-10 members).
• Plan and lead incremental development of upgrades and system improvements.
• Support managing cost and technical performance of medium to large program teams or large subcontractors.
• Prepare and maintain project plans, budgets, and staffing requirements to ensure action item completion and project quality.
• Support and motivate the team to deliver customer milestones and meet program business plans.
• Interface with management, suppliers, customers, and technical design team members.
• Provide timely and effective communication to management and customers.
• Lead engineering activities associated with design, development, procurement, and testing.
• Provide technical and functional leadership for assigned components, projects, teams, and tasks.
• Plan and maintain detailed schedules and resource plans.
• Lead Technology Development programs guiding products through the Technology Readiness Level process.
• Demonstrate adherence to FACE and DO/178 technical standards.
• Lead system development teams in modeling, requirements, software, and design using enterprise tools, processes, and best practices.
• Lead systems engineering execution and troubleshooting for complex embedded software, hardware, LRUs, and system-of-systems environments.
• Develop and manage technical risks and execute mitigation plans.
• Establish trusted relationships with customers, support staff, and suppliers.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers.
• Domestic travel up to 20% of the time.

Requirements

You must have:

• A degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field with a minimum of 7 years of experience.
• Experience with Systems Engineering leadership in an agile environment.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $132,400 – $251,600 USD. The range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Factors considered include role, function, responsibilities, work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Schedule

This is a remote position. Employees primarily work offsite but may be expected to travel to a Collins site as needed. If you live within a reasonable commute of a Collins site with colleagues you interact with, your manager may discuss a degree of onsite presence for the role.
