Senior Principal Engineer Mechanical
This is an in-person position located at the Redondo Beach, CA campus. Active Top Secret (TS) clearance required at start; previously held an active SCI clearance within the last 12 months. Travel is required, approximately 10% of the time. Relocation assistance is not available.
About the Role
Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems sector is seeking a Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer (Level 4) to design Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE) for integration, test, and launch of spacecraft. MGSE includes non-flight hardware such as lift slings, transportation systems, robotics, zero-g deployment fixtures, pneumatics, and propellant loading systems. This role supports multiple programs across human space exploration, national defense, and scientific discovery.
Responsibilities
- Design and model in 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software
- Draft using Y14.5 GD&T
- Provide fabrication support at vendors, including acceptance testing and inspection
- Support end-users during integration operations
- Develop conceptual designs and define requirements
- Prepare and present design reviews
- Perform first-order structural analysis of isotropic materials
- Develop and capture proof load diagrams
- Resolve deviations to fabrication drawings and hardware non-conformances
- Develop Integration & Test process flows
Requirements
- Bachelor’s of Science Degree in a STEM discipline plus 9 years of experience, or Master’s of Science Degree in a STEM discipline plus 7 years of experience
- Experience working on multi-disciplinary teams, preferably within Integration, Test, and Launch (IT&L) or Manufacturing environments
- ASME Y14.5 experience
- First-order structural analysis experience
- Preliminary and critical design review (PDR and CDR) development experience
- Intermediate understanding of GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5
- Intermediate knowledge of bolted joints and welding of aluminum and steel structures per AWS Standards
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills
- Ability to drive alignment across program functions to meet deadlines while prioritizing quality
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance
- Experience with design of MGSE
- Experience with manufacturing or integration of P093 program hardware
- Intermediate understanding of Finite Element Analysis
- Experience developing support equipment for use at the Eastern or Western Range
- Design for manufacturing (DFM) experience
- Experience developing support equipment for use in Thermal Vacuum
- Experience developing over-the-road or over-the-air satellite transportation equipment

Pay
Primary salary range: $129,300 – $193,900. Base salary offers consider scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills, and market conditions. Eligible employees may receive overtime, shift differential, and discretionary bonuses. Annual bonuses reward individual contributions and company results. Vice President or Director positions may qualify for Long Term Incentives.
Schedule
This position follows a 9/80 work schedule, allowing employees who work nine-hour days Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
