Senior/Principal Code Consultant
About the role
Rimkus, a leading Built Environment Solutions provider, seeks a Building Codes Consultant to join our dynamic team. Our consultants work closely with clients across the globe, ensuring compliance with building, fire, plumbing, energy, and accessibility codes. This role involves providing expert consultation, performing design reviews, and collaborating with project teams to ensure compliance with stringent regulations.
Responsibilities
- Provide code-related consulting services to clients in the architectural, real estate investment & management, and building engineering industries.
- Support clients with code analysis and interpretation via email, phone, and in-person meetings.
- Draft memos and reports addressing code issues and communicate with local officials and fire departments on behalf of the client.
- Conduct design reviews of proposed projects, including plan reviews for egress, life safety, fire safety, accessibility, and plumbing.
- Perform zoning reviews and draft reports outlining findings and suggested remediation for non-compliant conditions.
- Collaborate with project teams to develop compliance alternatives where strict code compliance is not feasible.
- Prepare and submit code variance requests to state-level boards as needed.
- Prepare life safety architectural drawings using AutoCAD.
- Survey existing fire protection systems and draft reports assessing their findings and remaining useful life.
- Draft reports summarizing risks and risk mitigation strategies related to the storage and use of hazardous materials.
- Design solutions such as fire modeling, egress modeling, and structural fire-resistance analyses.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Engineering is required. Master's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering is preferred.
- Familiarity with ICC and NFPA codes is required.
- Background in Architecture, Construction, and Fire Protection is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years experience in the architecture, construction, or building engineering industries. More senior candidates are considered for this role.

- Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications including Microsoft Office and computer-assisted engineering and design software.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical reports, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients, write scopes-of-work, budgets, schedules, reports of findings, proposals, and other technical documents.
- Ability to independently manage time and project workloads.
- Capable of working independently and on project teams.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $180,000 and is dependent on education, experience, location, and certifications/licensure.
Physical Demands, Overtime, And Travel Requirements
- Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (i.e. Client's office, industrial, construction, and/or residential sites).
- Employee is frequently required to stand, walk on slopes, sit, climb ladders, work from stationary and moveable scaffolding, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to job sites.
- Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Employee must be sharp, focused, and alert when conducting site inspections, speaking, and interacting with clients, preparing written reports of findings.
- Clear vision and depth perception are necessary.
- Overtime - This position is classified as salaried with an exempt FLSA status. Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one hour for lunch. There will be periods where overtime will be required.
- Travel Requirements - This position requires up to 25% local/regional travel. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required. Expected regular travel in the Greater Boston Area, but may include some national and international travel.
