Senior/Principal Code Consultant

About the role

Rimkus, a leading Built Environment Solutions provider, seeks a Building Codes Consultant to join our dynamic team. Our consultants are experts in their fields, ensuring compliance with building, fire, plumbing, energy, and accessibility codes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide code-related consulting services to clients in the architectural, real estate investment & management, and building engineering industries.
  • Support clients with code analysis and interpretation via email, phone calls, and meetings; draft memos addressing code issues; and represent clients with local officials and fire departments.
  • Conduct design reviews of proposed projects, including plan reviews for egress, life safety, fire safety, accessibility, and plumbing; draft reports outlining applicable code requirements and analyzing project compliance.
  • Perform on-site building surveys to assess code compliance with respect to building, fire, accessibility, or plumbing codes; draft survey reports outlining findings and suggested remediation.
  • Collaborate with project teams to design solutions to challenges in building design and construction where strict code compliance is not possible (compliance alternatives).
  • Prepare and submit code variance requests to state-level boards as needed.
  • Prepare life safety architectural drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Survey existing fire protection systems; draft reports summarizing findings and assessing issues and remaining useful life.
  • Draft reports summarizing risks and risk mitigation strategies related to the storage and use of hazardous materials in various industries.
  • Develop design solutions such as fire modeling, egress modeling, and structural fire-resistance analyses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Engineering is required. Master's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ICC and NFPA codes is required.
  • Background in Architecture, Construction, and Fire Protection is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in the architecture, construction, or building engineering industries. More senior candidates will be considered.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills and technical writing abilities.
  • Outgoing and able to professionally interact with staff, clients, and building owners.
  • Able to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Respectful of clients and co-workers, clear and articulate presentation skills.
  • High level of analytical skills, continual attention to detail, ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications including Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and computer-assisted engineering and design software.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical reports or journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients, write scopes-of-work, budget estimates, schedules, reports of findings, proposals, general correspondence, and other technical documents.
  • Ability to independently manage time and project workloads.
  • Ability to work independently and on project teams.
