Senior Plumbing & Fire Protection Designer or Engineer

Join PM Group’s growing Boston area team in Burlington, MA. Our office specializes in cutting-edge Life Science projects, focusing on Biologics, Pharmaceutical, and Cell & Gene Therapy facilities—from feasibility through qualification—for both local and international clients. We seek a Senior Plumbing / Fire Protection Designer or Engineer who thrives on client interaction and technical challenges. This role involves handling multiple complex projects while maintaining a collaborative work ethic to deliver high-quality results.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the generation of schedules and material take-offs for equipment procurement.
- Support technical bid tab evaluations of vendors in compliance with client specifications.
- Develop project packages through kick-off meetings, design reviews, and factory acceptance tests (FATs).
- Interface with vendors, disciplines, and clients to ensure high-level service delivery.
- Deliver design scope within budget and schedule.
- Develop plumbing and fire protection systems, including:
- Sanitary and vent systems
- Storm systems
- Process waste systems
- Lab and vent systems
- Domestic water systems
- Process and lab gas systems
- Sprinkler system design (wet/dry/pre-action)
- Develop project documents (calculations, reports, construction drawings, and specifications) per regulatory and industry standards.
- Coordinate with internal disciplines and external team members (vendors, clients, contractors).
- Conduct code analysis for plumbing and fire protection disciplines with oversight from the Lead Engineer.
- Research materials and methods as required.
- Assist with design development and coordinate with the design team under the Lead Engineer’s direction.
- Edit plumbing/utility equipment and construction specifications.
- Perform equipment selections and complete equipment schedules based on Lead Engineer recommendations.
- Develop pump head calculations where applicable.
- Size and layout underground and above-ground piping plans.
- Develop P&IDs, equipment plans, plant/utility distribution plans, and system details.
- Provide construction assistance, including submittal reviews, RFI responses, and field visits.
- Support special projects as needed.
Requirements
- 7+ years of design experience in a design firm setting, preferably in the Life Sciences industry (Pharmaceutical, Biopharmaceutical, Cell & Gene Therapy sectors).
- Proven experience designing multiple systems, including:
- Sanitary and vent systems
- Storm systems
- Process waste systems
- Lab and vent systems
- Domestic water systems
- Process and lab gas systems
- Sprinkler system design (wet/dry/pre-action)
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit is required.
- Knowledge of GMP manufacturing environments is preferred.
- Ability to travel as needed for client and project development.

Pay
The pay range for this position is $80,000 – $120,000 annually. Actual compensation will depend on factors such as work location, qualifications, skills, and relevant experience.
