Senior Plumbing Engineer
About the role
EXP is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Plumbing Engineer to work in a flexible role that includes engineering, design, and specification of building mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and process systems for Life Sciences, Research and Development, Pharmaceutical, and cGMP projects. Experience with design-bid build, IPD, design-assist, and design-build project delivery is required in the San Francisco, California office.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor junior engineers, engineers, and designers on all responsibilities.
- Review code-related items with engineers to ensure compliance.
- Perform at a responsible charge level to meet EXP design and quality standards.
- Quality control (QC) all work of plumbing engineering staff.
- Apply risk management procedures daily to minimize EXP and client exposure to problems.
- Create narratives (basis of design) for schematic design (SD) work.
- Perform front-end loading of plumbing systems and develop/monitor plumbing work plans.
- Write new specification sections and develop new details as required for project needs.
- Write studies and reports for plumbing systems when needed on projects.
- Understand and apply engineering principles and fundamentals.
- Engineer the following systems:
- Pure water systems, including RODI, WFI, and other high-purity filtration.
- Sanitary and laboratory waste and vent systems.
- Domestic and industrial cold and hot water systems.
- Natural gas systems.
- Tempered water systems.
- Clean dry air and breathing air systems.
- Laboratory compressed air systems.
- Laboratory vacuum systems.
- Laboratory specialty gas, bulk gas storage, and distribution systems.
- Fire protection systems, including sprinkler, fire pump, water storage, containment, gaseous suppression, and misting systems.
- Sustainable plumbing systems, including grey water, solar heating, and rainwater harvesting systems.
- Perform life cycle cost analyses and energy/cost calculations for plumbing systems.
- Develop alternative 'Engineered' plumbing systems that meet code.
- Evaluate value engineering (cost-cutting) items with respect to EXP’s level of risk.
- Select and schedule equipment with limited oversight from senior staff.
- Meet with vendors to determine specification requirements for application.
- Perform field verification and take-offs of existing systems for renovation projects.
- Coordinate with other disciplines (MEPFP, Architectural, Structural, Process, etc.).
- Maintain the engineering book for the project.
- Respond to RFIs for the project and accurately review submittals with limited input from senior staff.
- Solve installation problems with plumbing and piping systems; travel to site to resolve issues.
- Manage and deliver revisions and sketches.
- Edit and develop scope of work narratives (Basis of Design, etc.).
- Meet with contractors during the bid phase to review construction details.
- Proficient in REVIT and AutoCAD for working drawings.
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in related project management and design of Life Sciences, Research and Development, Pharmaceutical, and Critical Facilities systems and building projects.
- Engineering Degree (BS Mechanical, BS Architectural Engineering, or equivalent) from an accredited school.
- PE License.
- Ability to travel within the San Francisco/Bay Area, San Diego, Chicago, and Canada.
Pay
The pay range for this role is $120,000 to $170,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors unique to each candidate, including skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location.
