Senior Platform Engineer

About the role

This is a senior platform engineer position at Nirvana, a company that aims to simplify healthcare coverage verification through machine learning and AI. The role involves owning and evolving the foundational technology that product engineering teams rely on. Key responsibilities include improving platform reliability and observability, developing test infrastructure, reducing friction on infrastructure, managing platform costs, maintaining compliance, and providing on-call support.

Responsibilities

• Define and improve Service Level Objectives (SLOs), error budgets, and observability practices.
• Own the test infrastructure as a platform service, including harnesses, environments, CI gates, and tooling.
• Reduce friction on all things infrastructure, including environments, deployments, and day-to-day tooling.
• Own platform spend across the stack, partnering with a managed infrastructure vendor to drive migrations to completion.
• Maintain and evolve SOC 2 and HIPAA controls related to the platform, including logging, access, encryption, and PHI handling patterns.
• Provide on-call support for platform and infrastructure issues, escalating as necessary to the Director of Engineering and DevOps tech lead.

Requirements

• 6+ years of platform, SRE, infrastructure, or DevOps engineering experience, with 2+ years at a senior level.
• Deep AWS experience, including production EKS.
• Terraform as a daily tool, with experience in multi-account architectures.
• Real observability chops, including experience building or evolving an observability stack.
• Strong CI/CD instincts, with preference for GitHub Actions.
• Experience with test infrastructure as a platform concern, including harness design and modern AI-assisted testing tools.
• Comfortable with Python and TypeScript/Next.js, and experience contributing to the tooling around these languages.
• Experience in regulated environments (HIPAA, SOC 2, PCI) and a good understanding of PHI handling.
• Able to write opinions and disagree well, with a preference for being told the real situation rather than polished ones.

Pay

$175K - $215K base salary, plus equity, depending on experience and location.

Schedule

Hybrid schedule, with 3 days in the NYC office and 2 days remote (US time zones only).
