About the Role

Incumbents in these positions are licensed physicians that have immediate charge of a small medical section within a larger medical unit of a medical facility or a small program of a medical facility.

The Department of Health Services (DHS) Correctional Health Services (CHS) unit works with the Sheriff's Department to oversee the provision of coordinated medical, behavioral health, and substance abuse services to inmates in the county jail system.

Pay

Physicians are compensated according to the Physician Plan E Schedule. Additional compensation applies as follows:

• Physicians in Family Practice or Internal Medicine - General/Endocrinology continuously assigned to work in a County jail health facility receive an additional 5.5% of their base salary step.
• Senior Physicians (Item No. 5456) who are board-certified in their assigned specialty receive a flat-rate monthly bonus equal to 5.5% of their base salary step. This bonus applies to certification in one specialty only.
• Due to a manpower shortage, incumbents and appointees in the medical specialties of Family Practice and Internal Medicine-Endocrinology are compensated at Step 10 of the E Schedule.

Responsibilities

• Performs administrative duties such as preparing budgets for the section, determining equipment and supply needs, addressing personnel-related issues, developing and revising work procedures for expediting workload or improving levels of service, and screening work.
• Formulates policies and plans and directs the programs and medical work of the section or assists in such activities for a division of a medical department.
• Examines, diagnoses, and prescribes treatment for patients and reviews the care prescribed by staff physicians, resident physicians, and interns.
• Participates in the training of interns and resident physicians.
• Coordinates the work of the section with that of other medical and paramedical services.
• Confers with consultants regarding care of patients and medical and diagnostic work performed, and coordinates the work of consulting physicians with the work of the section.
• Supervises the maintenance of records and the compilation and preparation of reports.

Requirements

• Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties* or equivalent training**.
• One year of experience in medical practice, post-graduate training, teaching, or investigative work.
• A valid California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
• A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Special Requirements

Equivalent Training: Defined as training formally recognized in writing by the appropriate American Certifying Board as equivalent. Certification may be designated in one or more of the following specialties:

• Family Practice
• Internal Medicine - General/Endocrinology

Residency Program Completion: Applicants who will complete their medical residency program approved by an American Specialty Board within 12 months of filing may compete in this examination. However, their names will be withheld from the certification list until proof of completion is submitted. Applicants must provide a recommendation letter from the Residency Program Director confirming good standing and anticipated successful completion date within 15 calendar days of filing.

California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate: Applicants who do not possess this certificate at the time of filing may compete, but their names will be withheld from the certification list until the certificate is provided. The certificate must be current and unrestricted; conditional, provisional, probationary, or restricted certificates will not be accepted.

Physical Requirements

Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Examination Content

This examination will consist of a self-assessment based on a Supplemental Questionnaire weighted 100%, covering experience, professional development, collaboration, leadership, and management skills. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher to be placed on the eligible register.

Eligibility Information

• Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis, and those receiving a passing score will be added to the eligible register.
• Successful candidates will remain on the register for twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
• No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
• The resulting eligible register will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Integrated Correctional Health Services (ICHS) as they occur.

Schedule

Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
