SENIOR PHYSICIAN, CORRECTIONAL HEALTH

About the role

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) seeks qualified physicians to serve in the Correctional Health Services (CHS) unit. This unit collaborates with the Sheriff's Department to oversee medical, behavioral health, and substance abuse services for inmates in the county jail system.

Responsibilities

• Prepares budgets for the section and determines equipment and supply needs.
• Determines personnel-related issues and develops and revises work procedures.
• Formulates policies and plans for the section or assists in such activities for a division of a medical department.
• Examines, diagnoses, and prescribes treatment for patients.
• Reviews the care prescribed by staff physicians, resident physicians, and interns.
• Trains interns and resident physicians.
• Counsels with consultants regarding patient care and medical/diagnostic work.
• Synchronizes the work of the section with other medical and paramedical services.
• Maintains records and compiles and prepares reports.

Requirements

• Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties or equivalent training.
• One year of experience in medical practice, post graduate training, teaching, or investigative work.
• A valid California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
• A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation.
• Physical Class III Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Special Requirements

• Equivalent training is defined as that training which the appropriate American Certifying Board formally recognizes in writing as being equivalent.
• Certification may be designated in one or more of the following specialties: Family Practice, Internal Medicine - General/Endocrinology.

Salary

Physicians in Family Practice or Internal Medicine - General/Endocrinology, who are continuously assigned to work in a County jail health facility, during such assignment, shall receive additional compensation equal to 5.5 percent of the step on the appropriate E Schedule to which the Physician is assigned. Additionally, all other persons appointed to the position of Senior Physician (Item No. 5456) who have obtained certification by the appropriate American Medical Specialty Board in the specialty to which he/she is assigned, shall receive an additional compensation of a flat-rate monthly bonus equal to 5.5 percent of the step on the appropriate E Schedule to which they are entitled based upon experience.
