Senior Physician Assistant - General Surgery

About the Role

The Senior Physician Assistant provides high-quality, efficient, team-based patient-focused care under the direction of a supervising physician. Responsibilities may include managing patients in the office, hospital, ED, and/or perioperative settings, first assisting in the OR, performing department-specific procedures, and facilitating on-call duties for the supervising physician. This role requires evening or weekend hours as needed and provides clinical and operational expertise while mentoring less experienced Physician Assistants.

Responsibilities

• Examines patients, performs comprehensive physical examinations, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and physical examination results.
• Administers or orders diagnostic tests (e.g., imaging studies, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests) and interprets results for deviations from normal.
• Performs therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, and infection management.
• Performs department-specific diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
• Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes, and assists in continuity of care.
• Instructs and counsels patients on compliance with therapeutic regimens, growth and development, family planning, emotional health, and health maintenance.
• Facilitates admissions, transfers, and discharges.
• First assists in surgeries or performs procedures as applicable.
• Rounds on inpatients and performs admission evaluations, including obtaining medical history, reviewing records, performing physical exams, and documenting findings.
• Provides pre-operative/pre-procedure education to patients and families.
• Answers questions regarding surgery, procedures, recovery, and risk factor modification; performs peri-operative procedures.
• Reviews patient charts for allergies, medical history, and abnormal findings.
• Assists in surgical procedures, starts IVs, and performs suturing as required by the specialty.
• Performs post-operative procedures, including entering orders, assisting with patient evaluation, reviewing vital signs and diagnostic studies, and managing patient recovery.
• Facilitates patient discharge and dictates discharge/transfer summaries.
• Mentors less experienced Physician Assistants and collaborates on performance improvement activities.

Requirements

• Minimum three (3) years of experience as a physician assistant within the last five (5) years.
• Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited physician assistant program.
• Physician Assistant License (California) required at hire.
• National Provider Identifier and Physician Assistant National Certificate required at hire.
• Basic Life Support certification.
• Fluoroscopy Permit required within 18 months of hire for Orthopedics, Interventional Radiology, and Radiation Oncology.
• Experience and competency in department-specific tasks may be required.
• Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced certification in specialty area.
• Robotics experience.

Pay

The posted pay range is $131,400 - $170,032.50 per year. Actual base pay will be determined based on labor market data, internal alignment, and a candidate’s relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.

Schedule

• Part-time, 30 hours per week.
• Shift: Day, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
• Working hours: 07:30 AM - 05:30 PM.
• Travel: Up to 50% of the time.
• Work setting: Onsite at Oakland Specialty Medical Office Building and Richmond Medical Center.
