This position offers a remote work arrangement. The individual in this role will need to travel to campus, on occasion, to attend critical meetings and important campus events.

About the role

This senior-level position within Advancement is responsible for working with some of the College’s highest potential prospects. Working with the Senior Vice President for University Advancement, this position will secure and steward restricted and unrestricted gifts from assigned individuals and families believed capable of making $10 million and above gifts in support of Dartmouth College’s institutional priorities. The role involves developing prospect relationships with Dartmouth alongside senior development officers and college administrators.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a portfolio of high-potential individual prospects through the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship cycles.
  • Forges relationships with a diverse population to secure eight-figure gift solicitations aligned with the College’s priorities.
  • Creates and implements multi-step plans to deepen relationships with core clients, engaging the President, Trustees, and high-level campaign volunteers in prospect strategies.
  • Articulates and implements donor communication strategies, drafting and customizing correspondence, proposals, and other written materials.
  • Travels to visit prospects, often in tandem with senior officers and high-level campaign volunteers, and coordinates campus visits.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with volunteers, alumni, parents, and friends to assist with prospect strategies.
  • Oversees preparation of funding proposals, briefings for senior officers, Trustees, and volunteers, and schedules stewardship reports.
  • Participates in management structures supporting top prospect strategy and tracking.
  • Shapes and implements initiatives to engage and leverage new gift income for institutional priorities (e.g., challenge gifts, presidential commission on financial aid, family leadership circle).
  • Develops collegial relationships with colleagues in the Dartmouth College Fund, Gift Planning, Leadership Giving, and professional schools, leading by example in professionalism and creativity.
  • Works closely with the Senior Vice President for University Advancement to engage the Campaign Executive Committee (CEC) and President’s Leadership Council (PLC), recommending prospects for service on boards of overseers and advisory boards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 6 or more years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 15+ years of experience in a complex college or university development operation, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience soliciting and securing planned gifts.
  • Ability to raise donor sights, articulate aspirational goals, present philanthropic opportunities, and close gifts.
  • Creative, professional, and entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Ability to work with and command the respect of faculty, senior officers, Trustees, and high-level donors and volunteers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated presentation abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work across a complex organization, providing leadership and coaching to staff.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of multiple teams, including volunteer committees; demonstrated volunteer management at the highest levels.
  • Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking capabilities.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
  • Flexibility and comfort with ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated integrity and ability to work effectively with all constituencies in a diverse institution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree.
  • Proven solicitation experience for gifts of $10 million or more, evidenced through professional references and reputation.
  • Deep understanding of the philanthropic process and individual giving behaviors combined with direct solicitation experience.
  • Solid experience working with faculty, senior officers, and development professionals, with a talent for coaching and mentoring junior colleagues.
  • Comprehensive campaign experience.

Pay

Hiring range: $182,300 – $227,800.

Schedule

The department offers a hybrid or fully remote work arrangement with some travel to campus for meetings and events. The working schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, with a flexible schedule available.
