Senior Payroll Specialist
About the role
The Senior Payroll Specialist at Veros Credit is responsible for advanced payroll processing and oversight, ensuring the accurate and compliant execution of payroll for the organization. This role serves as a subject matter expert on payroll regulations, systems, and processes, supports complex payroll scenarios, and acts as a key resource for issue resolution, reporting, and process improvement. The Senior Payroll Specialist partners closely with HR, Finance, and leadership to maintain high standards of payroll accuracy, compliance, and employee experience.
Responsibilities
- Execute and review end-to-end payroll processing for salaried, hourly, and variable compensation employees.
- Validate complex payroll elements, including bonuses, reimbursements, retroactive adjustments, garnishments, and taxes.
- Conduct detailed payroll audits and reconciliations to ensure data integrity before final processing.
- Serve as escalation point for complex payroll issues.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws, tax regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure adherence to regulatory compliance.
- Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for UKG payroll system and timekeeping platform.
- Ensure accurate integration between HRIS, benefits, and payroll systems.
- Lead or support system implementations, upgrades, and testing efforts.
- Troubleshoot system issues and partner with vendors for resolution.
- Prepare and analyze payroll-related reports, including headcount, labor costs, and variance analysis.
- Perform general ledger reconciliations and support month-end, and year-end close processes.
- Resolve complex payroll inquiries and provide guidance to employees, managers, and HR partners.
- Educate stakeholders on payroll policies, timelines, and best practices.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure seamless handling of employee lifecycle events (hires, terminations, transfers).
- Assist with training, onboarding, and knowledge sharing within the payroll team.
- Support Payroll Director with special projects and strategic initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or related field preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including handling complex, multi-state payroll.
- Experience in mid-size to large, multi-state or multi-entity organizations preferred.
- Deep knowledge of payroll laws, tax regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Advanced proficiency in payroll systems and HRIS platforms.
- Strong Excel and data analysis skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong communication skills and ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion.
- Process-oriented mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.
