About the role
The Senior Paralegal will provide vital legal and administrative support for AlohaCare, a local, non-profit health plan serving Hawai`i's low-income residents with free Medicaid and dual Medicare health insurance coverage.
Responsibilities
- Review, draft, and assist in the negotiation of vendor contracts, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), business associate agreements (BAAs), confidentiality agreements, consulting agreements, insurance certificates, and other managed care contracts.
- Identify and escalate key legal risks, compliance concerns, and material business terms for appropriate review.
- Avoids, summarizes key provisions, and ensures alignment with corporate policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Maintains an organized contract database, including tracking of key terms, deadlines, renewals, and amendments.
- Reviews legal and contract documents and coordinates communications with outside counsel and internal stakeholders.
- Conducts legal research related to healthcare laws, contract interpretation, and industry best practices.
- Prepares memoranda, reports, and legal summaries for senior leadership.
- Monitor, track, and research federal and state regulatory developments relevant to the organization, including guidance from CMS, state Medicaid agencies, and other regulatory authorities.
- Analyzes regulatory updates and identifies potential impacts to the organization’s compliance program.
- Prepares clear, concise summaries, reports, and briefings to support regulatory awareness for the Compliance team and senior leadership.
- Maintains organized documentation and reference materials related to laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance.
- Supports compliance with corporate governance and licensing requirements.
- Aid the Compliance team in interpreting regulatory requirements and supporting compliance program activities.
- Assist the Compliance department, as needed.
- Lead document retention practices and provide guidance to staff on recordkeeping requirements.
- All other duties assigned.
- Adhere to all regulatory compliance and quality guidelines, as well as AlohaCare policies and procedures.
- Maintain AlohaCare’s confidential information in accordance with AlohaCare policies, state and federal laws, rules and regulations regarding confidentiality.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in Law, legal studies, Health Administration or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of paralegal experience, preferably in a managed care, healthcare, or insurance organization.
- Strong understanding of contract law and healthcare regulations.
- Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on controversial or complex topics.
- Technical writing expertise.
- High sense of integrity.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents including but not limited to new regulations, laws, etc.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on controversial or complex topics.

- Proficient knowledge of spreadsheets/graphics, presentation, and databases.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Programs: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
- Experience in the operation of general office equipment to include PC, fax/copy machine and phone system.
