Senior PAPRs Systems Engineer
About the role
ProEquip is a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring civilization can withstand and recover from severe biological crises, including AI-enabled pandemics. We model severe biological crisis scenarios and deliver the capabilities needed to withstand them, including crisis preparedness and response infrastructure and highly effective respiratory protection, with an initial focus on critical infrastructure.
Team
We are led by a senior team with decades of combined experience across global respiratory product development, engineering, applied research, and regulatory affairs, and are backed by access to hundreds of millions of dollars for stockpiles, research, and infrastructure. We are building capabilities that simply do not exist anywhere else.
What You Will Do
- System Evaluation and Partner Assessment
- Develop comparative evaluation frameworks across all major subsystems
- Design and direct test plans to validate or stress-test system performance claims
- Evaluate strengths, weaknesses, and suitability of each system for ProEquip's target use cases
- Translate test findings and quality assessments into specific, actionable improvement recommendations
- Contribute to ProEquip's broader PAPR research agenda
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years of hands-on engineering experience with PAPR systems
- Deep working knowledge of PAPR subsystems
- Experience designing and executing test plans for respiratory protective equipment
- Practical understanding of quality systems and supplier qualification
- Strong technical communication skills
- Background in industrial hygiene, human factors, or field deployment of PAPR in complex environments
Nice to Have
- Prior experience at a major respiratory protection manufacturer
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline
- Master’s degree in a relevant field, including Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health and Safety, or Aerosol Science

Pay
The expected base salary range for this position is $150,000 to $200,000 per year. Actual base pay will be determined based on factors such as relevant experience, education, skills, and geographic location.
Schedule
This is a full-time position based in Berkeley, CA (remote considered with frequent travel), reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer.
