Senior Packaging Engineer

About the Role

The Senior Packaging Engineer is a key member of the Engineering team, responsible for executing project plans related to packaging, including new client product introductions, market launches, supplier changes, manufacturing line support, and package development. This role ensures packaging systems meet customer needs with optimal process and cost effectiveness, while collaborating with internal teams and external customers.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate, recommend, develop, and implement packaging materials/systems based on factors like operations, regulatory, marketing, quality, and artwork.
• Perform and coordinate material and packaging system testing for regulatory filing requirements.
• Develop and execute test protocols and reports.
• Collaborate with external customers and internal manufacturing sites on packaging development.
• Lead or participate in project teams.
• Support packaging component and/or equipment selection and validation.
• Problem-solve quality deviations during manufacturing operations.
• Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and due diligence testing.
• Provide technical assessments for key component changes.
• Partner with Global Procurement on vendor identification and implementation.
• Develop and sustain a harmonized approach to packaging design.
• Manage scale-up of new products and manufacturing feasibility batches.
• Determine appropriate use of packaging materials for product stability.
• Develop and execute validation studies for processes, equipment, and facilities.
• Update, review, and approve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other documents.
• Collaborate on validation projects, including protocol execution and report writing.
• Provide technical expertise in pharmaceutical equipment operation.
• Support engineering department with capital projects and troubleshooting.
• Contribute to lean manufacturing and continuous improvement programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field.
• 6+ years of experience in Packaging Engineering in a GMP industry.
• Experience with packaging development related to glass, plastics, delivery systems, and sterilized components.
• Project management capabilities.
• Lean manufacturing skills.
• General knowledge of solid oral dose processing is a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Primarily on-site at the Philadelphia packaging facility.
• Ability to walk the production floor, climb stairs, and stand for extended periods.
• Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow gowning procedures.
• May be exposed to manufacturing, laboratory, or warehouse environments, adhering to safety, GMP, and gowning protocols.
