About the role

This position performs a variety of reception, administrative support, records processing, and document production using standard office technology. Work includes greeting the public and answering questions and providing customer service, typing or data entry work, creating and maintaining accurate files, logs and records. The employee is expected to have a good understanding of the Health Department and County and its services to respond to inquiries, including some technical knowledge about departmental or County policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Scheduling appointments for medical patients
  • Working with patients using tact and courtesy in person or over the phone
  • Performing reminder calls for upcoming appointments
  • Communicating with a variety of health care professionals, including providers, nurses, lab staff, etc.
  • Handling paper and electronic files
  • Aiding with billing and insurance claims
  • Resolving scheduling conflicts
  • Resolving questions
  • Taking accurate and concise messages according to Health Department protocols
  • Accurately entering patient information in the computer/scheduling program
  • Correctly canceling and rescheduling appointments as needed and documenting in the patient chart
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality
  • Directing urgent calls to nursing staff
  • Checking out patient at end of visit answering any patient questions including simple billing questions
  • Collecting co-payments from patients and entering information into an electronic billing system

Requirements

Graduation from high school supplemented by business courses and some administrative support and/or office technology experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Ability to learn scheduling software
  • Ability to answer phones and schedule medical appointments
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality as per the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1966 (HIPAA)
  • Significant knowledge of office or work unit procedures, methods and practices
  • Significant knowledge of and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling and office terminology to compose and/or proofread correspondence, reports and other materials
  • Significant knowledge of accounting procedures, mathematics and their application in the work environment
  • Ability to learn and independently apply laws and departmental rules and regulations covering programs and services
  • Ability to review and process information to determine conclusions, actions or compliance with applicable laws, rules or regulations
  • Ability to apply a variety of work-related formulas or mathematical calculations
  • Ability to record, compile, summarize and perform basic analysis of data
  • Ability to independently work with people with courtesy and tact in performing public contact duties that may be sensitive in nature

Stanly County provides health & vision insurance with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Our plan is a PPO, 80/20, with a $1000 deductible. Teledoc is offered through our insurance for a $10 co-pay per visit. Primary care visit is a $40 co-payment. Specialist is $50 co-pay. One free eye exam per year. The insurance coverage is FREE to full-time employees. Dental Coverage is with Guardian dental insurance and is FREE to full-time employees. Other volunteer insurance benefits include: Flexible Spending Program, Life Insurance, Cancer, Accident, and Disability policies. Stanly County offers an employee health clinic. Our on-site Advance Practice Provider will see employees and dependents covered on our county insurance plan free of charge. This service does not replace your primary healthcare providers but augments their care. As a wellness benefit, employees have the option of joining the Stanly County YMCA. The County will pay half of the employee’s membership. Employee Assistant Program is offered through Atrium Health. Each employee will receive up to six (6) free sessions on a rolling year. Dependent children and/or spouse may also use the sessions. Retirement Stanly County Employees will be a member of the N. C. Local Government Employees’ Retirement System. Stanly County is required to withhold six percent (6%) from each paycheck and deposit it into the retirement system. The County also contributes to the plan. You are vested at five years as a contributing member. After one year of contributing membership in the system, a death benefit is available if you die while still in active service or within 180 days of your last day of service. NC 401(k) (Supplemental Retirement Plan) Employees can contribute to the Empower 401(k) plan upon hire. If the employee contributes at least one percent (1%), Stanly County will match one percent (1%). Additionally, employees may make additional contributions through the following options: 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and Roth Plan Option. Longevity Longevity pay is earned after three (3) years of continuous Local Government retirement benefited service working with Stanly County government.
