Senior Nurse Anesthetist

About the role

The position involves administering anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical procedures in the operating room or other procedures under the supervision of a faculty member of the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care at the UCSF Medical Center. UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) to practice and function in their clinical role. Credentialing takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

Responsibilities

  • Determines the condition of patients prior to a procedure by reviewing medical records, assessing patient's status, conducting a thorough preoperative evaluation, and physical exam of the patient.
  • Plans for and administers anesthetics, including inhalation, intravenous, and regional techniques.
  • Observes, monitors, and records vital signs and other parameters.
  • Maintains patients in a surgical anesthetic state.
  • Determines the need for, and administers fluids, blood products, and adjunct drugs.
  • Keeps the surgeon and attending anesthesiologist informed of the patient's condition.
  • Takes necessary remedial action to correct unacceptable changes in vital signs.
  • Documents anesthetic in accordance with legal requirements; records type of anesthetic used.
  • Performs post-operative follow-up in the recovery room.
  • Communicates with the attending anesthesia faculty member, as needed, before, during, and after surgery.
  • When not assigned to a case, is available for work as needed, determined by the Daily E1 anesthesia faculty physician.
  • Works with the physician/surgeons/Advanced Practice Provider (APP) colleagues and other clinical and administrative staff to ensure efficient patient management based on accepted practice.
  • Provides patient and family education and engages in any approved privileges after demonstrating competency through proctoring or Focus Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) process.
  • Answer clinically relevant patient medical advice calls or during bedside communications or in coordination with health care professionals, patients and their families as necessary.
  • Absorb and interpret ordered test, procedures, and radiographic studies.
  • Affordably formulate and implement protocols to improve efficiency in the clinical specialty.
  • Effectively communicate with family or patients in person, telephone, and/or other electronic modalities in a timely manner.
  • Ensure in their absence, appropriate coverage has been arranged for patient management and communication as appropriate.
  • All shifts are variable to meet operational needs and patient care and are subject to change with the required union notice.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center campuses.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Graduation from a school of anesthesia accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Schools of Anesthesia.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Anesthetist program.
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Pay

Final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
