Senior Network Operations Engineer
Job Description and Duties
Effective July 1, 2025, in accordance with the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented in response to the status of the State budget. PLP 2025 requires each full-time employee in Bargaining Unit 01, and related Excluded, Exempt and Statutory Exempt employees, to have their base salary reduced by 3% and to receive 5 PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 30, 2027. Salaries do not reflect the recent changes.
About the Role
This position is in the Information Technology Services Division, which deploys the information technology infrastructure and clinical information technology systems that enable the Department’s clinical staff to provide a constitutional level of access to care for our patients. Information technology support ensures California Correctional Health Care Services operates seamlessly, delivering consistent, cost-effective, reliable, accessible and secure services that support clinical and administrative programs; customers, including the patients, and business communities.
Responsibilities
- Serves as the Senior Network Operations Engineer, demonstrating a depth of leadership and expertise while performing a wide variety of complex tasks in support of System Engineering.
- Optimizes and applies architecture solutions for the benefit of the overall organization and heavily participates in advising and/or formulating information technology strategy and policy within the Department.
- Maintains confidentiality of information acquired while performing job duties, demonstrates ethical behavior, and works cooperatively with others.
- Travel to institutions and after hours support of California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) software applications and systems may be required due to operational need.
Requirements
- Under the general direction of the Information Technology (IT) Manager I, the incumbent must maintain confidentiality of information acquired while performing job duties, demonstrate ethical behavior, and work cooperatively with others.
Qualifications
- Requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in network operations, system administration, or a related field.
- Experience with network design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with Microsoft Windows Server, Linux, and other operating systems.
- Experience with network security protocols and technologies.
- Experience with network monitoring and management tools.
- Experience with cloud computing platforms and virtualization technologies.
- Experience with data center operations and management.
- Experience with project management and team collaboration.
Skills
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of industry-standard network protocols and technologies.
- Experience with scripting languages such as Python or Bash.

Pay
The starting salary range for this position is $85,000 - $100,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary does not reflect the recent changes due to the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025).
