About the Role

The Senior Medical Science Liaison (MSL) – Hematology is a field-based scientific and clinical expert on current and future Johnson & Johnson Innovative products. This role serves as a strategic scientific partner, integrating multiple internal and external data sources to inform medical engagement, patient care, and territory strategy. The Senior MSL develops and enhances professional relationships with key thought leaders and healthcare provider teams, providing fair, balanced, objective, and non-promotional scientific information and education. The position is based in Portland, OR, with the bulk of customer engagement centered there, and also covers Idaho.

This role involves staying abreast of the current scientific and treatment landscape in hematology, critically evaluating emerging data, and providing scientific support for investigator-initiated studies. The Senior MSL will not assume sponsor responsibilities but will facilitate scientific exchange and connect investigators with internal research and grant processes.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a scientific engagement plan for the territory that aligns with Medical Affairs strategy, prioritized medical objectives, and approved core medical assets.
• Engage in high-quality, two-way scientific exchange with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) to serve as a resource, understand their perspectives, and identify trends, unmet needs, and educational gaps in the relevant disease area.
• Identify and cultivate strong professional relationships with community and academic HCPs/KOLs to advance scientific credibility.
• Utilize insights and MSL tools to develop a strategic approach for customer engagements, proactively uncovering gaps, risks, and opportunities to enhance medical impact.
• Leverage AI tools and insights to enhance decision-making, streamline processes, and improve efficiency across core responsibilities.
• Identify provider educational needs and address them with tailored responses, framing data in a compelling, scientifically balanced, and medically appropriate manner.
• Deliver relevant scientific data tailored to HCP needs through clear dialogue and presentation, translating complex clinical evidence into meaningful discussions.
• Collect and submit high-quality, actionable insights aligned with the organization’s strategic priorities to inform medical strategy and cross-functional discussions.
• Provide point-of-contact support to investigators and internal partners for both company-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies, responding to unsolicited research/clinical inquiries with scientifically sound, objective, and compliant information.
• Consistently execute the current Medical Affairs strategy and MSL priorities while balancing short-term execution with longer-term objectives, adapting plans based on evolving data and compliance considerations.
• Compliantly collaborate with internal stakeholders, including MSL field partners, R&D, US and Global Medical Affairs teams, clinical operations, and other cross-functional teams.
• Demonstrate strong scientific acumen through self-study, journal clubs, educational seminars, and scientific discussions with peers, serving as a resource for the broader medical team.
• Foster a culture of inclusion and belonging, increasing engagement, productivity, and innovation to reflect the diverse communities served.
• Develop a thorough understanding of regulatory and healthcare compliance guidelines, corporate policies, and Medical Affairs SOPs.
• Develop and implement a performance and development plan in collaboration with the direct manager, including leadership projects that contribute to medical planning and organizational capabilities.
• Perform all administrative requirements (e.g., expense reports, documentation of activities) in a timely, accurate, and compliant manner.

Qualifications

• A Doctorate-level degree or equivalent experience is required (e.g., PharmD, PhD, MD, Advanced Practice Providers). Post-graduate experience is required for doctoral-level candidates, with preference for therapeutic clinical experience.
• 2+ years of relevant experience, including demonstrated success as an MSL.
• Strong scientific/therapeutic expertise with skills in research, data analysis, clinical expertise, problem-solving, strategic thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.
• Ability to support a defined territory with up to 70% travel, including in-territory visits and attendance at internal meetings, external congresses, and related events.
• Must hold a valid US Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

• Residency/fellowship preferred.
• Knowledge or experience in the therapeutic area of hematology.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CoPilot, and utilization of computers and remote technologies.
• Related clinical, research, or pharma work experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to learning emerging technologies, such as AI, through exploration and application.
