Senior Medical Director, Rheumatology

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Medical Director in Clinical Development who will be involved across the full scope of rheumatology and autoimmune clinical drug development activities—from discovery research through first-in-human, POC, and Phase 3 studies. The role includes leadership of one or more studies within the portfolio and close collaboration with cross-functional asset teams to advance clinical programs and overall asset strategy.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the physician lead for LUMUS, a 388-patient Phase 2b clinical trial evaluating the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of multiple doses of ESK-001 in adult patients with moderately to severely active, autoantibody-positive SLE.
• Provide leadership for in-stream data reviews and reconciliation efforts.
• Hold authorship of clinical portions of key study documents, such as Protocol Amendments and Regulatory Submissions.
• Oversee the LUMUS medical monitor.
• Participate in external scientific engagement, including peer-to-peer interactions with MDs.
• Represent Alumis as a leader, supporting corporate initiatives across rheumatology.
• Coach, manage, inspire, and support team members to achieve goals through collaboration.
• Maintain the highest levels of integrity and standards for scientific inquiry in drug development.

• Provide hands-on leadership and apply expertise to help make LUMUS thrive, partnering seamlessly with the operations team.
• Focus on improving and maintaining study data quality, including cross-referencing of the main efficacy endpoints.

Requirements

• MD (or ex-US equivalent) with board certification in Rheumatology.
• 5+ years of clinical development experience; background in lupus clinical trials is desired.
• Proven leadership skills, including experience managing people within a pharmaceutical company or clinical/academic environment.
• Ability to assess, understand, and communicate complex medical and scientific information.
• Strong strategic, organizational, and executional skills to support project planning across multiple activities.
• Ability to prioritize workload across multiple projects of equal importance.
• Approach deliverables in an organized manner with attention to detail and meet timelines in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience working across diverse teams in a matrixed organizational structure, both as a leader and team member.
• Strong interpersonal, influencing, presentation, and communication skills (written and verbal) for all organizational levels.
• Ability to work autonomously and with a high level of independence.
• Willingness to travel to Alumis’ HQ in South San Francisco for one week out of every month.

Schedule

This position is located in South San Francisco, CA, with employees expected onsite Tuesday–Thursday. Open to remote applicants with a requirement to be onsite once a month.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $300,000–$358,000 USD annually. Actual salary may vary based on compensation practices. Alumis compensation packages include generous stock option grants for all employees and an annual bonus program.
