About the role
The Senior Medical Assistant - Urology position at Houston Methodist Medical Center is responsible for providing comprehensive support to urology patients under the supervision of physicians. This role requires a minimum of five years of medical assistant experience with a focus on highly complex, chronic disease management.
Responsibilities
- Prepares patients for examinations and treatments, including pre-visit planning and documentation.
- Assists with diagnostic procedures, such as EKGs, rapid strep tests, urinalyses, and urine pregnancy tests.
- Ensures patient safety and privacy by following infection control protocols and maintaining sterile environments.
- Coordinates patient care with other healthcare providers and external resources.
- Monitors patient progress and ensures adherence to treatment plans.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives and maintains clinical documentation accuracy.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Five years of medical assistant experience with highly complex, chronic disease management or in a specialty discipline.
- A certification as a Certified Medical Assistant through AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, NHA, or Registered Medical Assistant, along with BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Knowledge of medical practices and procedures, including the ability to assist with examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatment plans.
- Ability to maintain accurate medical records and follow established policies and procedures.
- Proficiency in computer systems for documentation and work-related purposes.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Positive attitude and ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams.
