Senior Mechanical Engineer
About the role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead HVAC system design—including airside, hydronic, and steam systems—across a diverse portfolio of multidisciplinary (A&E) projects. This role will support major market sectors such as Mission Critical, Healthcare, Utility Plants and Campus Distribution, Corporate/Commercial, and Laboratories.
Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Design: Lead HVAC design for complex building systems, overseeing airside, hydronic, and steam systems from concept through construction documents.
Perform load calculations, system sizing, engineering analyses, and coordinate technical program requirements.
Conduct engineering studies for sophisticated clients, including lifecycle cost and payback analyses, evaluation of industry trends, and assessment of local contractor/maintenance practices.
Prepare high-quality technical documents, including Basis of Design reports, engineering narratives, and written explanations for non-technical stakeholders to support informed decision-making.
Sign and seal mechanical engineering drawings and specifications.
Project & Client Management: Serve as Project Manager or engineering lead for mechanical-prime projects, providing direct client interface and managing project execution.
Develop project schedules, manage and track progress, and ensure on-time delivery of engineering deliverables.
Prepare and manage mechanical engineering fees and resource plans.
Work closely with MEP department heads to allocate staffing and technical resources.
Monitor budgets throughout the design process and ensure alignment with project financial goals.
Cross-Discipline Coordination: Collaborate closely with architectural, structural, civil, electrical, and plumbing teams to ensure fully coordinated design solutions.
Support field questions, contractor coordination, and construction administration activities as needed.
Mentorship & Team Development: Provide continuous mentorship to junior engineers and designers; Deliver presentations and contribute to in-house continuing education programs.
Qualifications
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States.
Proven technical writing skills and strong communication abilities.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project).
Experience with Revit 2016 or newer (at least 25% of work hours in production).
Experience with Trane TRACE or IES VE energy modeling software.
Ability and willingness to travel up to 10%, including overnight trips.
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or architectural engineering from an accredited four-year university.
10+ years of mechanical engineering experience in commercial building design and construction.
Minimum 5 years serving as the primary engineering interface with clients (either as PM or engineering lead).
Minimum 5 years of project management and client-facing experience.
Skills
