About the role
nLIGHT is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own hardware design and development efforts of high-power laser diode modules from concept through production.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to and lead mechanical design efforts for the development of new laser diode products and tooling to support manufacturing and testing
- Generate innovative hardware architectures to meet performance, environmental, reliability, and cost requirements
- Apply DFSS principles throughout the development process to create manufacturable, cost-optimized solutions that meet design goals
- Perform engineering analysis including thermal, fluid, and mechanical stress modeling to guide designs of high-precision opto-mechanical assemblies
- Validate manufacturability of new designs by identifying critical manufacturing tolerances and viable process plans
- Participate in the procurement process and collaborate with suppliers to ensure optimal manufacturability and cost
- Thoroughly document development efforts and present concise reporting of progress and outcomes to all levels within nLIGHT
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
- Minimum of 7+ years of relevant industry experience
- Successful track record of high-precision product and tooling development
- Hands-on experience measuring, assembling, and inspecting prototype products and tooling to validate designs
- Familiarity with manufacturing methods for low to high volume applications
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and engineering drawing practices, including tolerance analysis and GD&T per ANSI Y14.5
- Experience performing engineering analysis to guide design decisions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
Preferred Experience
- Background in designing high heat load, precision opto-mechanical assemblies
- Experienced with New Product Introduction (NPI) and product qualification practices
- Environmental and mechanical qualification testing for military or aerospace applications
- Proficiency with Ansys or COMSOL analysis tools

Pay
Starting pay depends on qualifications: $103,000 - $125,000 annually.
