About the role
IMEG, an employee-owned corporation, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer in our Ann Arbor, MI office. This position is part of both the Technical and Project Management paths.
Technical Path
- Lead design efforts for the analysis of HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems.
- Utilize engineering software and tools to create detailed designs, specifications, and calculations according to code requirements and IMEG standards.
- Perform site assessments and generate detailed analysis and technical reports.
- Interact with clients to understand their needs, gather project requirements, and communicate technical information effectively.
- Build and maintain client relationships through professional communication.
- Provide in-process design reviews of HVAC, plumbing and fire protection system design, calculations, specifications, and project correspondence.
- Implement IMEG quality control processes to ensure that engineering designs and solutions meet IMEG quality standards, industry standards and client requirements.
- Provide technical training and mentoring.
- Provide technical assistance in resolution of field issues with limited support from senior staff.
- Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in mechanical engineering.
- Contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG.
- Prioritize safety in all aspects of engineering work.
- Identify and mitigate potential safety risks associated with mechanical systems.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including other engineers, architects, and project managers, to deliver integrated solutions that meet project goals.
- Participate in project interviews and project presentations.
Project Management Path
- Cook up projects ranging in size and complexity.
- Aid Project Executives and Client Executives with design scopes of work and fee calculations for proposal generation as well as with contract reviews.
- Create project schedules including targets for milestones and deadlines.
- Serve as the point of contact for teams and clients.
- Create monthly billings and submit financial information to Accounting in a timely manner.
- Ensure design follows owner standards and requirements, IMEG standards and code requirements.
- Ensure design milestone deliverables are achieved, IMEG and client quality control processes are completed, and construction technical support occurs in a timely manner.
- Schedule and lead progress meetings and provide meeting documentation.
- Conduct construction site visits and provide documentation as needed or requested.
- Respond to and resolve client / construction concerns.
- Manage change orders and obtain appropriate approvals.
- Train, mentor, and motivate staff.
- Build, maintain, and develop client relationships.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Advanced proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications.
- Advanced proficiency in technical and analytical skills including proficiency of principles in thermodynamics, psychrometrics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics relating to mechanical design in HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems.
- Strong training, mentoring and leadership skills.
- Ability to perform final quality control check in their area of expertise.
- Ability to sell work and develop client relationships.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Eagerness to adapt to new challenges.
- Proficient with MS Office Suite including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to travel up to 20% with occasional overnight stays.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, required.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License required.
- 7 years of experience minimum required, 8 preferred, in the building design consulting industry.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds.
- Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull.
- Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises.
