Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
About Us
At Intramotev, we are dedicated to revolutionizing the freight industry by liberating tons of freight from congested highways, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing transportation efficiency. We deploy self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles to transform freight logistics and bring innovation to our rail network. Based in St. Louis, MO, we are committed to promoting industrial revitalization, saving lives, and minimizing the environmental impact of trucking and transportation. We foster a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive work environment with opportunities for professional growth.
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to own detailed mechanical design across two domains: vehicle integration hardware—mounting, bracket, and interface hardware for integrating components onto our self-propelled battery-electric railcar platform—and enclosure design for the electrical and electronic systems that support it. This includes thermal management, ingress protection, EMI considerations, mounting, and access. This role does not own primary vehicle structure, chassis design, or drivetrain-specific integration hardware. You will flex between these domains as project needs shift, taking designs from concept through documentation and into production under the direction of the Mechanical Engineering Team Lead.
This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You will work within a team of 3–10 engineers and engage in occasional domestic travel for testing, integration, demonstrations, and customer interactions.
Responsibilities
- Own detailed design of vehicle integration hardware—mounting, bracket, and interface hardware for integrating components onto the rail vehicle platform—and enclosures for electrical/electronic systems, from concept through documentation and into production.
- Perform and review structural and thermal analyses to validate integration hardware and enclosure designs for performance, durability, and safety.
- Design enclosures addressing thermal management, ingress protection, EMI shielding, and serviceable mounting and access for housed electrical/electronic components.
- Apply GD&T and DFM/DFA practices, partnering with manufacturing and suppliers to optimize designs for cost, quality, and buildability.
- Develop test plans and support validation and verification activities to confirm designs meet operational and functional requirements.
- Provide technical support for fielded designs, resolving issues that surface across the product lifecycle.
- Collaborate closely with electrical, systems, and manufacturing engineers to resolve interface and integration issues across vehicle and enclosure subsystems.
- Maintain complete, accurate design documentation supporting downstream production and service needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
- 5+ years of mechanical design experience for vehicles, electrical enclosures, or comparable complex industrial equipment.
- Demonstrated ownership of detailed mechanical design—vehicle integration hardware, enclosures, or comparable subsystems—through to production/build.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD; comfortable working from ambiguous or partially-specified requirements.
- Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your expertise and develop innovative approaches.
- Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment as an individual contributor.
- Fluent in both written and verbal English.
- U.S. Person (immigration or work visa sponsorship will not be provided).
Preferred Qualifications
- Autodesk Inventor experience (equivalent CAD, e.g., SolidWorks, is acceptable).
- Experience across both vehicle structures and enclosure design, or clear transferable skills between the two.
- GD&T and DFM/DFA practice.
- Rail, EV, automotive, or heavy-machinery industry background.
- Experience with a PLM/PDM system (e.g., Autodesk Vault or similar).
Benefits
- Medical coverage: 100% of employee medical premiums covered, plus low-cost dental and vision options.
- Unlimited paid time off for full-time employees.
- Equity in the company for full-time employees.
- Paid parental leave for new parents.
Pay
Base salary: $110,000 - $130,000 plus equity.
