About the role

The Senior Marine Research Technician oversees deck operations, equipment stowage, and handling of scientific samples on oceanographic research vessels. They manage and assist with the shipment of science equipment, operate and maintain various oceanographic sampling and data collection equipment, and coordinate logistics between internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of deck operations and equipment stowage
  • Management and assistance with the shipment of science equipment
  • Operation and maintenance of oceanographic sampling and data collection equipment
  • Cruise data management and archiving
  • Ship-to-shore communications via various methods
  • Training of scientists, students, crew, and technical staff in the proper and safe use of shipboard systems and equipment
  • Training and performance assessment of junior technicians
  • Project management and coordination of in-port and at-sea logistics

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in natural or physical science or engineering
  • At least 3 years of experience leading deck operations on research ships
  • Experience operating large mechanical devices such as cranes, forklifts, and winches
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with mechanical seagoing equipment
  • Proficiency in oceanographic data and sample collection and processing techniques
  • Basic electronics troubleshooting experience
  • Experience in setting up data acquisition equipment and training users
  • Strong interpersonal and training skills
  • Ability to lift and move moderate weights in port and at sea
  • Physical fitness to perform duties without risking harm to self or others
  • Willingness to spend up to 6 months per year at sea in 1-2 month increments
  • Passport and ability to work at sea

Qualifications

  • Education: Degree in natural or physical science or engineering
  • Experience: At least 3 years of experience leading deck operations on research ships
  • Technical Skills: Experience operating large mechanical devices, troubleshooting mechanical equipment, and setting up data acquisition equipment
  • Other Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, ability to train and assess performance, and physical fitness

Pay

The annual full pay range for this position is $75,449 - $121,324, with an hourly equivalent range of $36.13 - $58.11. The actual salary offered will depend on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.

Schedule

The position is variable, with 8 hours on-site and variable hours when at sea, typically Monday through Friday when on-site.
