Senior Manager Software Engineering

About the role
The Senior Manager, Software Engineering reports directly to the Senior Director, Digital Engineering and is responsible for the ongoing creation, modification, and implementation of a modern, robust internet interface for the retail bank. This role leads a software engineering team to build and deliver the new strategic interface, replacing the current legacy retail system. The Senior Manager will work closely with Digital Engineering leads, middleware, security, and core systems teams to build and maintain comprehensive internet interface capabilities, advance development toolsets, and optimize the software delivery process using Agile methodology and containerized development.
The Senior Manager is accountable for all internet interface system design, maintenance, and performance, ensuring robust performance, future productivity, and reuse. They develop and enforce modern software engineering standards for exceptional functionality and performance/portability in a multi-cloud environment. The role requires a deep understanding of business needs, transparency with senior leadership, and high-quality implementations that meet First Horizon’s security, resiliency, recovery, and availability requirements.
The Senior Manager must manage a broad and diverse team, establish clear vision and goals, and skillfully oversee multiple suppliers to ensure proper value delivery while maintaining long-term control and efficiency. Occasional travel is expected.
Responsibilities
- Lead a software engineering team to build and deliver a new strategic internet interface for the retail bank.
- Collaborate with Digital Engineering leads, middleware, security, and core systems teams to build and maintain internet interface capabilities.
- Advance development toolsets, system utilities, and libraries to support modern software engineering practices.
- Optimize the software delivery process using Agile methodology and containerized development.
- Work with architects, cloud services engineers, and middleware teams to engineer secure, robust, and high-performing integrated platforms.
- Implement effective monitoring, logging, and alerting capabilities in partnership with the technology operations team to ensure high availability.
- Develop and enforce modern software engineering standards for functionality, performance, and portability in a multi-cloud environment.
- Ensure systems are well-architected for robust performance, future productivity, and reuse.
- Understand business needs and provide transparency to senior leadership during software development and delivery.
- Ensure implementations meet First Horizon’s security, resiliency, recovery, and availability requirements.
- Manage a broad and diverse team, establishing clear vision and goals to achieve top-quartile engineering quality and results.
- Oversee multiple suppliers to ensure proper value delivery while maintaining long-term control and efficiency.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a scientific field (preferred). Strong experience and other relevant degree study areas (e.g., business or economics) will be considered. Advanced degree beneficial.
- Technical software engineering certifications viewed favorably.
- ITIL and/or Agile certifications beneficial.
- 3+ years of experience as a senior leader of complex, large infrastructure teams.
- 7+ years of engineering experience, with at least five years in a complex, financial services corporate setting.
- Experience leading new build, cloud-native software projects.
- Experience working with geographically and technically diverse teams.
