About the Role

The Senior Packaging Manager leads the development, execution, and continuous improvement of packaging solutions across assigned brands or product categories. This role provides technical and people leadership while partnering with Marketing, R&D, Supply Chain, Procurement, Quality, and Operations. The position owns packaging development from concept through commercialization, ensuring solutions meet performance, cost, speed-to-market, regulatory, and sustainability objectives.

The Senior Packaging Manager oversees packaging testing, validation, specifications, and change-control activities, and supports equipment, tooling, and line-modification projects. This role also drives productivity, value engineering, standardization, and sustainable packaging initiatives. The position typically manages packaging engineers and/or specialists and serves as the escalation point for complex packaging issues.

Responsibilities

  • Lead packaging development for new product launches, line extensions, renovations, and productivity initiatives.
  • Translate brand, marketing, and consumer requirements into technically viable packaging solutions.
  • Ensure packaging meets functional requirements for product protection, shelf life, distribution, and line efficiency.
  • Provide technical expertise across rigid, flexible, paperboard, label, and other applicable packaging formats.
  • Oversee packaging testing, validation, qualification, specifications, standards, and change-control processes.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and food-contact requirements, including FDA, EU, and state regulations.
  • Support capital projects involving new equipment, tooling, and line modifications.
  • Deliver material, conversion, and logistics cost-reduction initiatives while balancing quality, risk, and time to market.
  • Partner with Procurement and suppliers on value engineering, innovation, standardization, and platforming opportunities.
  • Lead or support sustainability initiatives, including lightweighting, recyclability, post-consumer recycled content, and waste reduction.
  • Manage, coach, and develop packaging engineers and technical staff; set objectives and provide regular feedback.
  • Serve as the primary packaging partner for cross-functional teams and manage external suppliers, converters, OEMs, agencies, and testing laboratories.
  • Support artwork and graphics execution and participate in stage-gate or innovation governance processes, as applicable.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and BOM alignment and support packaging-related quality investigations and corrective actions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive packaging experience, including leadership experience in a consumer-packaged goods environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people and influencing cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Experience working with external suppliers, converters, agencies, OEMs, and testing laboratories.
  • Experience supporting high-volume manufacturing or multiple plants is preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Packaging Engineering or a related technical discipline is preferred.
  • Familiarity with sustainability regulations, packaging circularity initiatives, and food, beverage, personal care, or household products is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of packaging materials, formats, converting processes, testing methods, and manufacturing environments.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to evaluate cost, quality, risk, sustainability, and speed-to-market tradeoffs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop technical professionals.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and cross-functional influencing skills.
  • Ability to lead through ambiguity, manage complex priorities, and make sound technical decisions.
  • Structured problem-solving skills and a results-driven, continuous-improvement mindset.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, suppliers, converters, agencies, OEMs, and testing laboratories.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly communicates verbally and in writing and uses a computer and other standard office equipment.
  • Frequently sits, with periodic standing and walking during the workday.
  • May walk through manufacturing, warehouse, laboratory, or distribution areas and may occasionally bend, reach, or handle packaging samples.
  • Must be able to visually inspect packaging materials, samples, test results, and production conditions.
  • Occasional travel to company facilities, suppliers, testing laboratories, or project sites may be required.
