Senior Maintenance Worker - Airport

About the role

San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) is a self‑supporting enterprise owned and operated by the City of San José, rated California’s top‑performing airport for on‑time departures by Cirium in 2024 and 2025, offering nonstop service to more than 40 domestic and international destinations. The airport operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day and supports business aviation, corporate and general aviation traffic that represents over a quarter of aircraft operations. The Senior Maintenance Worker position is located in the Facilities and Engineering Division at SJC and involves leading a crew of up to six to eight employees performing skilled repair work across the airport’s physical assets.

Responsibilities

• Lead staff, including planning, scheduling, prioritizing and assigning work for special construction activities; ensure staff is appropriately trained to maintain Airport Terminal Buildings, including plumbing systems, sump pumps, sanitary lift pumps, and restrooms.
• Repair damaged walls, construct new walls, repair automatic door systems and door hardware.
• Install and repair floor coverings including carpeting, ceramic tile, composition tile and wood.
• Install and repair roofing systems including single ply, built‑up roofs and drainage systems.
• Install, maintain and perform minor reconstruction of roadways, airport movement and ramp areas, parking lots, chain link fencing, turf maintenance, area seeding and planting, tree trimming and upgrades to landscaping, irrigation systems, and roadways.
• Develop work priorities and manage the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) program.
• Lead maintenance work programs and special projects; assist the Airport Maintenance Manager/designee on a daily basis in facilitating these programs.
• Provide support to team members in a lead capacity, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment.

Requirements

• Completion of high school or equivalent (GED or California Proficiency Certificate).
• Four (4) years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, traffic control devices, sewers, parks, street landscaping, or public facilities.
• At least one (1) year experience providing lead direction to a crew engaged in semi‑skilled and skilled maintenance and repair of streets, traffic control devices, sewers, parks, street landscaping, public facilities and infrastructure, or groundskeeping.
• Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California; or a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements (as required for designated positions).
• Satisfactory completion and passing of a fingerprint‑based Criminal History Records Check.
• Ability to qualify under all applicable TSA and Airport regulations (background check and TSA check).

• Basic competencies: demonstrate knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies, and federal and state regulations.

Pay

Salary Range for Senior Maintenance Worker is $97,572.80 - $ 118,67684.80. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Schedule

The position operates within a seven‑day‑a‑week, twenty‑four‑hour‑a‑day airport operation. Work may be assigned any day of the week or any of the three shifts, with a flexible schedule to be determined at a later date.
