About the role

Senior maintenance technician responsible for ensuring the reliable operation of lyophilization and critical utility equipment in a regulated manufacturing environment, performing preventive maintenance, advanced troubleshooting, supporting installations and qualifications, mentoring junior staff, and maintaining cGMP‑compliant documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Review open work orders and prioritize preventive maintenance tasks across manufacturing, laboratory, and utility areas.
  • Monitor lyophilizer cycle performance, troubleshoot vacuum and refrigeration subsystems, calibrate temperature and pressure sensors, and perform preventive maintenance to keep freeze‑drying cycles within tight process tolerances.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and repair on cold rooms, ultra‑low temperature units, compressed air systems, cooling towers, chilled water systems, pumps, and RODI water systems, diagnosing mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, instrumentation, and control system issues.
  • Use technical documentation, schematics, and P&IDs to pinpoint root causes rather than just symptoms.
  • Support installation, commissioning, and qualification activities for new equipment (including lyophilizer upgrades or replacements).
  • Coordinate with and oversee contractors or OEM service technicians when specialized lyophilizer service is required.
  • Document completed work, calibration records, and equipment history to maintain audit‑ready status under cGMP scrutiny.
  • Mentor less experienced maintenance staff on lyophilizer operation and troubleshooting.
  • Field technical questions from cross‑functional teams and contribute to equipment reliability improvements.
  • Follow safety protocols and use appropriate PPE in a hands‑on environment that may involve ladders, elevated spaces, and physically demanding tasks.
  • Minimize unplanned downtime by diagnosing and resolving complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control system failures before they escalate.
  • Safeguard regulated operations by keeping critical refrigeration, lyophilization, vacuum, and utility water systems running reliably and in compliance with cGMP documentation standards.
  • Enable capital projects and upgrades by supporting installation, commissioning, and qualification of new equipment and system improvements.
  • Drive measurable reliability gains by analyzing equipment performance data and implementing root‑cause corrective and preventive actions.
  • Strengthen the broader maintenance team by serving as the go‑to technical resource across mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 6+ years of progressive maintenance experience in a manufacturing or regulated production environment with a demonstrated track record of increasing technical responsibility.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification (required).

Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and wiring diagrams.
  • Proficiency troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and PLC‑based control systems.
  • Hands‑on expertise in industrial refrigeration systems and vacuum pump diagnostics.
  • Specialized equipment knowledge: lyophilizers, vacuum systems, cooling towers, chilled water systems, RODI/water purification systems, and compressed air systems.
  • cGMP documentation fluency: working knowledge of compliance requirements, calibration records, and maintenance documentation standards in a regulated setting.
  • Mentoring and technical leadership ability.
  • Commitment to safety protocols and proper PPE use.
  • Capability to work independently using technical documentation, schematics, and P&IDs to identify root causes.
