About the role

This position performs skilled labor in the maintenance, repair and construction of the City/BLW’s facilities. Work involves a wide range of skilled labor in the following areas: woodworking, welding, sheet metal, drywall, plumbing, electrical and concrete work.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, plans and constructs new structures, and fixtures, as assigned.
  • Repairs and replaces City/BLW facilities and as needed.
  • Responsible for the following areas of construction, maintenance and repair:
    • Woodworking: Requires repair and construction of playground equipment, flooring, shelving, partitions, fencing, tables, benches and cabinets.
    • Concrete work: Requires building frames, job estimates and finishing to specifications.
    • Welding and sheet metal work: Requires ARC, wire feed, gas welding and some soldering occasionally required. Sheet metal work to repair and fabricate various City/BLW properties (i.e. truck beds, trailers, gutters, fencing, etc.).
    • Roofing: install of shingles, roof decks and roof metal. Repair work involves removal and replacement of decking, shingles and gravel.
    • Plumbing repair and replacement: Use of various types of materials such as copper, PVC, galvanized and polybutylene piping.
    • Drywall repair and replacement: Knowledge of mixing and finish drywall.
    • Painting: Uses of all types of paint for both indoor and outdoor applications.
    • Electrical: Knowledge of electrical functions, wiring and systems.
  • Supervises Maintenance Technicians I and II as assigned or in the absence of the Manager, Skilled Trades and Building Maintenance.
  • Interprets and explains blueprints and building plans to work crews.
  • Organizes and arranges labor, and materials to complete assigned projects.
  • Recommends independent contractors when necessary.
  • Provides supervision and inspections for quality control when contractors are hired.
  • Delivers materials and heavy equipment to job sites as needed. Loads and unloads as needed.
  • Assists the Manager, Skilled Trades and Building Maintenance in formulating the division budget.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ progressively responsible experience with building trades or 5 years’ experience and a certification from a vocational school.
  • Must have experience in the following areas:
    • Woodworking and finish carpentry and all related tools.
    • Welding. Must demonstrate skill in ARC, wire feed, and gas welding.
    • Roofing and roof repair. Must be able to repair and replace shingle, gravel, and rubber and tar roof systems.
    • Sheet Metal. Must be skilled in the fabrication of various metal items.
    • Operation of Heavy equipment. Must be able to safely operate tractors, backhoes, dump trucks and other related heavy equipment.
    • Painting. Must be familiar with all types of painting applications.
    • Concrete. Must be able to set-up forms and pour all types of concrete finishes.
    • Window & door repair and replacement.
    • Swimming pool maintenance and repair.
    • Basic electrical and wiring.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and ability to interpret and comply with various applicable building codes.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to supervise and organize work crews.
  • Skill and ability in applying shop mathematics.
  • Familiarity with the practices and procedures of building construction safety.
  • Physical condition with the ability to lift, pull or push moderate to heavy objects and walk or stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions.

Skills
